Somebody could've warned me....

Oh yes, did he appear at Winterfell while King Robert was there? Marianne, I am in awe at your knowledge of these books. Smile

So was it intimated in the books that Renly was having a relationship with Loras Tyrell?

MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 19:58

Yes poor Loras is devastated by Renly's death. In the TV show they show Loras sleeping around which is completely out of character as Canidae said, Loras said of Renly that "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it." Sad

PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 19:59

Yes, I've been missing Benjen as well.

Thanks for the summary, Marianne.
I suppose you're right when one accepts a throne won in conquest is justly won.

I love how the whole thing is of course fiction with some magic and dragons thrown in but the High Middle Ages are so well researched and depicted.
I'd've been some poor wench whose life would've been totally disposable at the whim of a Lord.

So, Aegon is modelled on William the Concquerer, eh?

Ooooh thanks for the Discworld help Smile

Pmsl at doing a Misery on GRRM.

I've got a third left to read of the last published book and I have to say I find the whole Dany and Merreen situation complicated and a bit boring. I just can't seem to remember all of the names of the characters there.

The whole Mance Rayder not really being dead is confusing me too. I remember when he was supposedly burnt, and there was some sort of switcharoo. But that's about it. Can anyone explain?

PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 20:31

Nope.

Some dead people seem to be deader than others Confused - I am alright with magic and dragons and shit, but undead dead... And they don't sound like they'd look attractive

I love Braavos and the Faceless Men although I want Arya to find love and life and happiness. I feel all maternal towards her.

And I want all the direworlves to be reunited. Well, all the Stark direwolves.

What's going to happen to Brandon?

What about Samwell? Will he ever become a Maester?

I could go on with questions.
I accept that GRRM is Not My Bitch, but pulling a Misery sounds more and more attractive the more I think about it... GrinWink[not really]

Melisandre switched Mance with the Rattleshirt (another wilding) and burnt fake-Mance. This is because Rattleshirt was a nasty bastard but Mance is useful (as a King - king's blood is important etc).

Real Mance then went to Winterfell in disguise (as Abel the Bard) to rescue fake-Arya (really Jeyne Poole - Sansa's friend who we haven't seen since the first book).

Bran will become a tree like Bloodraven if you ask me. Grin

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/09/2013 20:39

Yes, I have a hankering for all the Stark direwolves to be back together too.

I couldn't give two shits about Sansa, Bran or Rickon, but Jon Snow and Arya MUST live.

Do you think Dondarrion (I think that was his name) and his crew will appear in the books again?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/09/2013 20:44

Right, thank you for that Marianne, that makes sense now. I wondered why a singer was trying to smuggle out Arya/Jeyne.

MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 20:48

Dondarrion is dead so I don't think he will reappear. He gave the last of his "life force" to Catelyn.

I hope the Brotherhood without Banners makes another appearance. I really want the Blackfish to join them and rescue Edmure Tully, his wife and baby from the Lannisters.

I also hope Sansa starts to gain a bit of power instead of just being a pawn in other people's games.

PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 20:48

I feel sorry for Sansa - I think she needs to lurk on the FWR boards a bit and Grow a Spine.

Poor Rickon I feel sorry for - he was only a baby when it all kicked off.

Hm, Dondarrion? Him and his crew are quite colourful, it'd be good if they came back.

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 20:49

Oh, and Jon Snow - is it wrong to be besotted with a 17 year old? Blush
The Jon Snow of the books - the TV one is not quite hard enough or something. He's just not quite like the Jon Snow in my head.

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 20:51

And I am proper scared of Melisandre - what is her game? V spooky.

Marianne, you are just a font of knowledge!
How do you remember it all?
You are of course right about Dondarrion.
I like the Blackfish too - I bet he is going to Save The Day for somebody at some point.

OP posts:
MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 20:58

I wish I could remember stuff for my OU course as well as I can retain this kind of stuff! Grin

I think The Red God (R'hollor) is some up and coming power. Melisandre is preaching about him in Westeros, but at the same time there is another Red Priest heading towards Danaerys with one of Theon's uncles. I think the "Song of Ice and Fire" may come down to a battle between the red god and the White Walkers.

Or it will be between Danaerys and Jon Snow.

Do you know about the Rhaegar+Lyanna=Jon theory?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/09/2013 20:58

I think I must read with my eyes shut - a contradiction in terms I know! I completely missed the bit about Dondarrion, although I remember the whole zombie Catelyn bit.

Oh blimey, who the chuff is the Blackfish?

MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 21:00

Blackfish is Brynden Tully (Catelyn's uncle). He was holding Riverrun while it was under seige after the Red Wedding but escaped when Riverrun surrended to Jaime.

PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 21:04

Do you know about the Rhaegar+Lyanna=Jon theory?

Noooo, pray tell!

I thought he's Ned Stark's and some unknown woman's bastard?

OP posts:
ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/09/2013 21:04

Ah yes, and Edmure is Catelyn's brother?

Give us the John theory.

I've seen snippets of the dragon having three heads being significant, ie three dragons and three people to ride the dragons. One being Dany, another being Jon.

PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 21:06

Fire and Ice clearly implies some fight between Hot and Cold, so my money is on the North (Jon Snow) and Dragons (Dany).
Although... will she every learn to control her dragons and actually be able to use them? They seem a bit of a liability for the time being.

OP posts:
MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 21:11

Well there is talk in the fandom that Jon is Lyanna's son, not Ned's. In Ned's flashback to when he tried to save Lyanna he descibes her lying in her "bed of blood" which is a term used elsewhere in the books to describe the birthing bed. Then there is Lyanna's dying wish; "Promise me Ned" which it is thought could be her asking Ned to keep Jon safe. The only way he could do that would be to pretend Jon was his own, as Robert would have killed Jon if he knew he was Rhaegar's son.

This would make Jon a potential heir to the throne (although the Nights Watch vows may be a problem), but it could also make him one of the three heads of the dragon.

PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 21:19

Oh, I like that theory!

So Lyanna may have died in childbirth rather than having been raped to death? Or both Sad?

I can see Jon making a Good and Just King.

It would also mean he is Catelyn's nephew, wouldn't it?

OP posts:
PacificDogwood · 15/09/2013 21:20

Jon could get together with Daenerys and the might even have a child together?
How exactly did the foretelling go by the witch who 'revived' Khal Drogo and doomed her child?

OP posts:
MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 21:25

Some people think Lyanna ran away with Rhaegar because she loved him, rather than him kidnapping her. There isn't really much evidence for this, other than it being a nicer outcome for her.

The best evidence for this is that she says to Ned that Robert wouldn't be faithful to her (i.e. indicating that she wasn't all that into being married to Robert anyway) and that Ned said to Robert that he never saw the "iron underneath" Lyanna, which would indicate that she knew her own mind and would make her own decisions.

Still doesn't make it any better for poor Elia Martell though! Rhaegar believed he needed three children but Elia could only give him two, so he ran off with a younger woman! Git.

Canidae · 15/09/2013 21:32

I find Jon Snow quite boring. Shock

With Jon in the Nights Watch, Robb dead, Sansa captive (for now), Arya in Braavos and Bran becoming a tree, I want Rickon to take back Winterfell. I want him riding into battle on Shaggydog surrounded by unicorns!

MarianneEnjolras · 15/09/2013 21:32

The witch's prophesy said that Drogo will return when:

"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves. When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child. Then he will return, and not before."

The sun rises in the west and sets in the east could be a reference to Quentyn Martell (Martell sigil being the sun), he came from the West but died in the East.

The seas go dry could be a reference to the Dothraki sea, which is drying out and the grass is dying.

The mountains could be the pyramids in Meereen collapsing after Dany's dragons destroy them. (Although I wonder if it could refer to Gregor Clegane in some way as he was known as the Mountain that Rides).

At the end of ADWD Dany gets her period, but she isn't expecting it, which has led some to speculate that she is having a miscarriage and therefore her womb has "quickened" again.

So Dany could well have a living child at some point in the future and Drogo will return (zombie-like maybe? Like Catelyn or Dondarrion, or she could just name the child Drogo?).
