I want to broaden my reading, Jeanette Winterson is one of my favourite Authors, have read most of her books and The Passion is the one I love. Which modern authors should I be looking at?

There's a website called www.bookish.com/home which will give you recommendations if you put in some books you like, I find that quite handy. Also, www.whoelsewriteslike.com/, which tells you about other authors. Hope that helps Smile

Mcnorton - thank you, never heard of those sites, off to have a look!

You could also try Goodreads, which is great for book recommendations and keeping track of what you've read and want to read.

Angela Carter? Sarah Waters?

I like Isabel Allende, the Chilean writer especially 'The Island Beneath The Sea' and 'Maya's Notebook'.

'The House of Sand and Fog' by Andre Dubus III.

'The Garden of Evening Mists' by Tan Twan Eng is lyrical and I learnt a lot about the Japanese occupation of Malaysia and the legacy of this.

'Room' by Emma Donaghue

'Like Water For Chocolate' by Laura Esquivel

'Babette's Feast' by Isak Dinesen

'My Antonia' by Willa Cather

'The Well of Loneliness' by Radclyffe Hall

'The Waves' by Virginia Woolf (didn't appreciate this aged 15, revisited it recently and was transported by it)

'Light Years: A Girlhood in Hawai'i' by Susanna Moore (lyrical and beautiful)

'Sleeping Beauties' by Susanna Moore

I second Isabel Allende. I also love Rose Tremain.

Thanks everyone will check them out. Love Sarah Waters apart from The Little Friend.

Have you read Winterson's autobiography, 'Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?' I didn't think much of the second half but the first section was excellent.

Another vote for Isabel Allende. I particularly love, 'Paula' which is about the death of her daughter. It's exquisite.

Have you read, 'The Colour Purple?'

Also, you might like Amy Tan's, 'The Kitchen God's Wife.'

The Color Purple is superb. Have you read To Kill A Mockingbird?

Paula is a good read. Heartbreaking, though.

What didn't you like about The Little Stranger, Zara? I read it quite recently and really enjoyed it. I didn't see it as a ghost story at all, more an examination of the fragility of mental health.
