Fantastic children's books by Astrid Lindgren - are they well known in the UK?

She wrote Pippi Longstocking, which I know is popular here.

But she also wrote other fantastic, wonderful children's books which I'm not sure are widely known in the UK?

I can recommend them anyway!
I have read "The Children of Noisy Village" to dd1 recently, and she loved it.
Desperately sad and so suitable for older children is "The brothers Lionheart" (deals with death and loss)

Please do tell me if you all know about these books anyway -
Astrid Lindgren is very well-known in Germany and I just didn't see that much of her here!

Blimey - I just had a look on amazon - that'll be £20 each, please!

(Kidding! Grin)

am I the only one who read Karlson on the roof?

I loved this book and the Pippi ones.

mammaduck · 15/06/2006 17:59

I loved Pippi Longstocking as a child, but don't know any of these other titles. Must have got them from either the school library or local libraries.

HOW have I missed this thread?

Yeah I read karlsson, I'd love to find a copy for my son, we have the bullerby children and pippi but karlsson is maybe better for a 2 yo boy.

Although he does love Aurora...anyone remember Aurora?

TooTicky · 15/06/2006 18:26

Never mind Mardie and Madita, she's Madicken in Swedish.
We LOVE Astrid Lindgren (even went to Astrid Lindgren World in Vimmerby (Sweden).
The Brothers Lionheart is not sad if you read it all, it's amazing. My ds1 was nearly 5 when we read it together and he enjoyed it.
Mio My Son excellent too but hard to find.
Dd1 loves Ronja the Robber's Daughter - great for girls in particular (oh, and I like it too of course, as one would guess on meeting my dd2 whose name begins with R....)
Ds1 is currently mad about Emil (and the clever pig, in the soup tureen, gets into mischief)
Somebody was selling copies of The Confidences of Britt-Marie Hagstrom on ebay a while ago for a very reasonable price.
Rasmus and the Tramp/Vagabond also hard to come by, more in America than UK.
And has anybody ever heard of The Adventures of Simon Small (originally Nils Karlsson-Pyssling)? I so much want to read this!
Fillyjonk, you can borrow my Karlssons if you like.

TooTicky · 15/06/2006 18:48

Goodness, Filly, was that very forward of me? I just get sort of cyber-vibes that say you're the kind of person I'd lend books to. Weird. you could be a 123-year-old balding man with kleptomaniac tendencies. Sure you're not though!Grin
But I might be...

FillyjonktheFluffy · 15/06/2006 19:21

oooh, that'd be fantastic, ticky!

Just what I need for those long, lonely nights on the road...

my email addy is filyjonk at hotmail dot co dot uk

Hey, dunno if anyone else is up for this but what about having a children's book swap? Like the adults one but kids books. Don't actually have to read them to the kids either Wink...I think there might be a few of us who like kids books?

emkana · 15/06/2006 19:23

Well, I cried buckets when reading the Brothers Lionheart as a child, but then I am a big wuss! Grin

Children's book swap idea sounds great!

I loved Karlson on the Roof and Karlson Flies Again. Unfortunately my mum had lent them to someone years ago and they are now out of print in English.

I found them through ABE, but they were quite expensive. OUP owns the copyright of the English translation, but when I emailed them they said they had no plans for a re-print.

Great shame because they are truly fantastic. ds is only 1, but I am so looking forward to reading them to him.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 15/06/2006 19:32

hey, come join our book swap, lummox

lummox · 15/06/2006 19:37

thanks fillyjonk. have to confess i've spent a while re-finding books from when i was a child. Karlson was top of my list but also (going a bit off topic) some great American books - The Phantom Tollbooth and The Big Joke Game anyone?

FillyjonktheFluffy · 15/06/2006 19:40

see what would be nice is to swap books that actually, we want to read. tbh I'm not too interested in swapping "Daisy goes coo".

I also know that lots of kids books are actually quite suprisingly expensive and am not really suggesting we swop those (except by prior arrangement Wink to tt).

But theres loads of great books out there that I wouldn't think to read, and I need pointing to them! Also kids books are quite light and easy to post.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 15/06/2006 19:49

god, can i just clarify, ticky I'm not suggesting you enter your very nice karlsson books into a all-uk book swop...that would be very very cheeky.

but your post got me thinking about how nice it would be to broaden my kids books knowlege without faffing around on amazon.

(maybe we could charge...and with the proceeds buy Sculptor's Daughter? Wink)

LeahE · 15/06/2006 20:55

lummox -- might be worth emailing Purple House Press. They've just reissued The Brothers Lionheart and got round the copyright problem by getting it retranslated.

TooTicky · 15/06/2006 21:02

Absolutely Filly. Is your email address really filyjonk with just one l? Just wanted to check before possibly sending strange messages to complete strangers... or you can get me at [email protected]

FrannyandZooey · 15/06/2006 21:08

Haven't read whole thread yet but I understand there is a swap going on. I would love to join, please, please, pretty please, and I have lots of super books I would like to share. I suggest "My Friend Mr. Leakey" for starters. If you have not read it you are in for a treat :)

FillyjonktheFluffy · 15/06/2006 21:28

yeah, its filyjonk with 1 l, well spotted. Or alternatively, fillyjonk2 also at hotmail.

Pretty Please, can I join too, am quite new, but promise to behave!! Love kids books, not heard of most of these, but loved Pippi and the Moomins. Also absolutely loved the Pahntom Tollbooth. Just got loads of kids books recently, and tracking thm down for DD as she gets older, (only 22 months at the mo). It's really just an excuse for me to read them again!
