It was written by a woman in the last 10 years about a young woman who goes to work as a clerk in a path lab where she falls for the suave pathologist. It has a very memorable scene describing in grisly detail the body of a syphilis victim.

It's an excellent novel and I want to read her other work (she's written at least one other, set in the 60s) - but I can't remember her name.

Thanks - in hope!

Try looking at the lab lit site
www.lablit.com/the_list

one of these might ring bells!

(I actually rather like the idea of the plot you describe!)

Blazes. Google has indexed both our posts and it's barely 4 mins since I pressed send!

Wow I never knew this genre had a name. Thanks for that link. Wish a few more of them were available on kindle.

Thanks moonbells. Unfortunately nothing did...

Yeah, I just tried Google too, and it kept coming up with my post - how weird is that!

It wasn't Molly Lefebure was it? There was an adaptation of one of her books on tv recently. But wad set in 1940s not 20s.

DuchessofMalfi · 09/08/2013 20:59

was, not wad Smile

Thanks Duchess, not her either, though I bet the author I'm trying to remember read her memoir (and I might too!)

My book is set in London, definitely pre WWII and I think the protagonist is called Dorothy or Dora.

This is so frustrating, but more random googling has thrown up some other books I've never read, but will now (Borribles trilogy anyone) so not all bad...

Is it "Ghastly Business" by Louise Levene? I read this recently and really enjoyed it. Keep meaning to source some more titles by the same author if there are any.

GeorginaWorsley · 12/08/2013 08:21

I was going to say 'Ghastly Business' too.

Yes, yes, yes - that's it! Fantastic, thank you, wonderful MNers!

I really recommend this book, and am now going to check out her two others. (The 60s one is A Vision of Loveliness btw).

Marvellous...
