I'm just completing an Amazon order: some books he's read but doesn't yet own, some specific requests from him, plus some new ones with recent positive reviews.

Shock But I've a feeling I've missed something...? Possibly with a rave review in the Saturday Times recently...?

Any other suggestions welcome too. So far I've got:

Jenny Nimmo: Castle of Mirrors
Michell Paver: Spirit Walker
Rick Riordan: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
Justin Somper: Demons of the Ocean - Vampirates
Stuart Hill: Cry of the icemark
Joshua Mowll: Operation Red Jericho

What about some Anthony Horowitz ones? My 9 year old DS loves them. There's a series of them that starts with Stormbreaker. Also ones in the Cherub series by Michael Muchamore (i think!) about a gang of child spies.

I've not heard of Muchamore before, or the cherub series, or Gordon Korman. Can anyone else review/comment?

Ds1's read all the Horowitz books - Alex Rider, Power of Five, and Diamond series Grin, and all Harry Potter of course. He occasionally reads Horrid Henry/Captain Underpants sort of stuff, but we have plenty of that sort of thing around the house atm, and certainly don't need any more.

Has anyone come across \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1405219769/qid=1150060566/sr=2-2/ref=sr_2_3_2/026-8422753-9602853\Frand Beddor: The Looking Glass Wars}?

roisin, has he read Cornelia Funke's Inkheart and Inkspell (there will be a third one in the series)
dd loves them
also The Thief Lord

Bink · 12/06/2006 09:59

roisin, this is nepotism, almost exactly, because he's dh's cousin, but have you looked at \link{http://books.guardian.co.uk/extracts/story/0,6761,1481319,00.html\A Dog Called Grk}? Link is to an extract. I've seen various references to its being considered for awards, so this isn't just a vanity plug.

It was the first book ds read straight through (aged six) but it's aimed at much older, and in fact has some slightly challenging bits in it - I think the hero's parents die. So see what you think.

Bink · 12/06/2006 10:51

I meant to add, in case anyone can jump in and clear up the mystery, that a schoolgate mum was telling me about a science fiction series her (8ish) son is reading and really enjoys - I thought she said it was called "Deltura" but can't find it on Amazon. Anyone know what this is?

clerkKent · 12/06/2006 12:55

How about Terry Pratchett for younger readers, e.g. The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, or Narnia?

clerkKent · 12/06/2006 12:57

Bink

That would be Deltora \link{http://www.scholastic.com/deltora/books.htm\deltora}

Miaou · 12/06/2006 12:58

presume he's read all the Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events? Maybe a bit young for him now though.

Happy birthday to your ds - dd1 was 9 at the end of May Smile

Bink · 12/06/2006 12:59

Thanks, CK! By the way, what do you think of them?

clerkKent · 12/06/2006 17:04

Bink - I have never seen them! My web search found deltora when I tried deltoora (sounds like deltura).

KTeePee · 12/06/2006 17:13

Has he read The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart yet Roisin? Very popular with that age group around here...

roisin · 12/06/2006 18:13

Some great ideas here - thanks for all the suggestions. He's read (or sampled and rejected) most of the books on here, but there are some new ones - so we'll be trying those out.

Ta all
