ROFL! I "pushed" post twice there...

southeastastra · 10/06/2006 14:33

i read it, it got more irritating towards the end i thought, you can tell its written by a man as well.

Norah · 10/06/2006 14:41

I read it too - was a tad disappointed to be honest - had read a lot of glowing hype - and it didn't really come up to the scratch ! More a titter than a guffaw I think !

Definitely interesting in a "aren't people weird" kind of way !

Blandmum · 10/06/2006 14:49

Funny at the start, but san out of steam 3/4 of the way through, I thought.

TheDullWitch · 10/06/2006 15:51

Should be read by anyone whose kids are approaching secondary transfer. Especially in London. It is such sharp satire.

Cod · 10/06/2006 15:52

Hello, codster, not been watching the footie? I had a lovely snooze thru 2nd half.

Blandmum · 10/06/2006 15:54

I am very amused by the knowledge that j O'F helped to set up the school that his kids go to. Far do's to the guy, the local schools were crap, he didn't want to send his private, so he raised local interest and got a new school built. A city acadamy, paid for in part by the private company who own the private school my kids go to! Grin

no footie being tapes as ds1 at golf

Blandmum · 10/06/2006 16:04

fair play to the guy, he stood my his principles.

I'm just wildy amused that I am supporting his kids education. And I'm a plain old teacher and he is a filthy rich writer Grin

Hallgerda · 12/06/2006 10:02

I thought it had its hilarious moments, but the politics got a bit obvious (and oppressive) towards the end. A lot of the secondary transfer issues rang true (I've just been through it with DS1), but only part of the story was covered. There really are some bad secondary schools around which parents might wish to avoid for reasons other than snobbery. Ruby and family were a bit unconvincing - I suspect the author spends more time with the likes of Alice...

fullmoonfiend · 14/06/2006 18:23

just bought it yesterday and saving it for my hols! Thought it might be a suitably amusing light read for the beach?

Cod · 14/06/2006 18:24

agree re ruby

Liked it too. Particularly the sports day when the mothers end up running the race dragging the chlidren behind them.

roisin · 14/06/2006 18:44

Is it worth a read then? The boys saw it in Ottakars and wanted to buy it for dh's birthday (he has a nut allergy Grin), and I read the blurb at the time and thought it sounded pretty dire tbh Blush

Cod · 15/06/2006 14:01

soe buts are REALLY funny
was lol in bed last night

the seriosu bits are dull

love it wehn she tells FFion to FFFcuk off

Hallgerda · 15/06/2006 14:48

Yes, I liked that bit, cod, and the life coach's advice to Ffion. The youth club scene was my favourite part though.

roisin, it has very little indeed to do with nut allergies but does have some good laughs.

pashmina · 15/06/2006 16:05

i read it on holiday, and loved it (although last 1/4 got a bit silly) would make a great british film - together with a short history of tractors in Ukrainian

saadia · 15/06/2006 16:57

I found it very funny (agree with comments about Ruby and her family), thought the bits with the guy who smoked were particularly hilarious.

BettySpaghetti · 15/06/2006 17:11

I read it last week -agree with MB in that I thought it ran out of steam towards the end but other than that enjoyed it.

There were some funny bits that made me laugh out loud (Tony Blair child on a stick!) and some bits where I recognised some parents in the playground and cringed.

Anyone see John O'Farrell on Have I Got News For You last week? Think he was quite good from what I remember (although I did fall asleep and miss most of it Blush)

Cod · 17/06/2006 19:02

vety touchign last bit a abot the transience of child hood

read it in 24 hours (long, boring trip round a railway museum offered me a chance to slope off and sit in coffe shop:) ) Agree about the last 1/4 but very funny, LOL in places. Anyone whose kids are doing Oxford Reading Tree will appreciate the Biff, Chip and Kipper reading book excerpt!

Also recognised many parents Wink esp ffion when she says things like ''look, happy memories - do you remember when little Bronwyn was on this piano piece...'' substitute that for school reading books and you have a 'friend' of mine in a nutshell:)
