Alexei Sayle: Overtaken

Ok, I just read this and ... wtf? I guess I expected "funny" from a comedian, and it certainly wasn't that. Interesting, I guess, and involving. The main character is (mostly) a horrible person, but you do sorta feel for him. There's lots of classist stuff that comes off as a bit cheap.

Anyone else read this?

Nope, but I did read two of his collectionsof short stories, bit hit and miss. Lots of nasty characters, tbh. My favourite one was about two comedians who went to Haiti to learn Voodoo. But some just plain grim.

Yeah, this one is pretty grim. Interesting with it, I guess. But I felt some of the characters were really just total stereotypes ... Well, I bought it for DH a while back, and he wants more of his books, so no doubt I'll end up reading more.

alexie seems to have gotten a bit grim lately, he was my fav comedian. don't recommend this book then?

I'm not sure. It was well-written. It was reasonably interesting. You can't predict what's going to happen next.

Part of my objection, really, is that I'm ill, and figured it would be light fluff, and although it's not exactly Tolstoy, it's not Bridget Jones, either. Which isn't really Alexie Sayle's fault.

But, I would say, if "chavvy" stereotypes get your back up, don't read this book.
