Just applied - the pictures look lovely in this. Think DS2 would really enjoy it.

SisterMatic · 09/07/2013 21:03

Me too, will be an appropriate read for my toddler at the moment Grin

mummyto2boys01 · 09/07/2013 23:29

Also applied - think my son would love this book. :)

Coppernob · 11/07/2013 14:34

Just had an email saying I'll be getting a copy. Thank you. I'm sure my granddaughter will love it as 'No' is one of her favourite words!

HorseyGirl1 · 11/07/2013 14:40

thank you thank you so much for this. I have never ever won anything but now I have! Can't wait to read it to my wee boy. Thanks again!

cornflakegirl · 11/07/2013 20:49

Just seen we're getting one too - very exciting! Thanks Lara!

Crinklecut · 20/07/2013 23:54

Looking forward to receiving my copy!

tinypumpkin · 22/07/2013 20:08

Yay, we received ours today. DD2 (almost 4) really loved it. Very pertinent since I was getting no about various things at bedtime. She really liked the illustrations and the story. DD2 definitely started to engage with the story and anticipate what the character was going to say. A perfect bedtime read and just the right length.

Thank you, very happy customers in this house :) It will soon be a favourite I am sure.

cornflakegirl · 22/07/2013 20:10

Our copy arrived today - thank you. We've read it several times and DS(3)really likes it, and kept asking me to read it again. The main character, Archie, has one word speech bubbles, and DS enjoys joining in with that part. He said that his favourite part is when it's about to rain and Archie won't come inside.

I thought that the pictures were beautiful and the story was good to read and to reread. I wouldn't buy it as a present though, because there is no real story development. It was just Child says No - Child gets comeuppance - Child changes. It wasn't annoying or preachy, but it was a bit too long for nothing to really happen. I felt like it should either be shorter, and maybe more like eg Jez Alborough's Hug (I think that inferred detail is something this book does well, like JA does), or have a real plot.

DH also wasn't keen on the fact that it suggests there is no polite / appropriate way to say no. He really likes the Dad when his braces are dangling down, and that the colour of the speech bubbles intensifies as Archie shouts louder.

I think for both of us that it's a book we'll happily read when DS asks, but not one we'd pull out and suggest to him.

HorseyGirl1 · 22/07/2013 21:37

Just a quick line to say that our book arrived today and I have already read it twice to my little boy. It is a lovely book and know that it is one I will read and reread to him. The illustrations are really lovely and it's just a charming little story. I had already made up my mind to look out for this book as it sounded so nice and couldn't believe that I actually won a copy. Thanks again.

SisterMatic · 23/07/2013 16:52

Thank you for my copy of this lovely book.
I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book as did DD, it made them really easy to explain. DD particularly liked the illustration of archie being left in the rain, she said 'oh no, its raining mummy, he is sad!'

It was just the right story length and is our bedtime book at the moment...she wants to read it again and again!

Crinklecut · 23/07/2013 19:06

My DDs loved the illustrations in this book, they thought that Archie was really cute. they also commented on how his face got sadder as he realised that he had said no and missed out on a treat/fun.

The language was simple and easy to understand...my 5 year old read it several times to my 3 year old, and both were able to tell me what had happened.

BlueEyeshadow · 23/07/2013 20:40

DS2 (aged 3) loved this book straight away and we had some good chats about the relative merits of "yes" and "no" as an answer or favourite word. I really liked the way the pictures convey the emotions in the story, and it's such a simple message. Also the repeated "no" makes it good for learning to read.

More thoughts on my blog.

mootime · 23/07/2013 20:50

We received our copy of this book yesterday and my son (3) instantly wanted to read it. It is beautifully illustrated, well written and with a clear and simple message.

I thought it was possibly a little simple for ds but he asked for it a bedtime yesterday and today, so he definitely enjoyed it. Dd (18mo) happily sat and listened too, although who knows if the message will go in!

Thanks again.

Coppernob · 23/07/2013 21:37

I've had to read this several times today to my 3 year old granddaughter. She loved it and, judging by her sheepish expression, could identify with Archie!

clux73 · 23/07/2013 21:40

My 4 year old was really pleased to receive this. She was very proud that she could read it herself - even adorable! We both loved the illustrations and thought Archie was very cute. Tomorrow we are passing it in to my 2 year old nephew as I think he is the perfect age for it.

littlewifey · 23/07/2013 22:04

My daughter absolutely loved this book! Thank you Mumsnet.

lottegraham · 23/07/2013 22:25

Beautiful book received my copy today. Lovely colourful pictures and great characters. my little one will love this when he is a little older. Im sure many parents can also relate to this story, which makes it more enjoyable to read :) x

mummyto2boys01 · 23/07/2013 22:28

My copy arrived this morning - thank you Mumsnet.

Read it with my son right away and he really enjoyed the story and illustrations. It was easy for him to follow and he could definitely identify with Archie and the lesson he learned at the end of the story. :) A great story for children ages 3 and up. I would recommend it and it gets a thumbs up for my son too.

TummyMummy36 · 24/07/2013 12:04

Thank you Mumsnet for the copy that came in yesterday, it is a sweet book!
Many children would relate to the theme instantly and the illustrations are thoughtfully done. DS2 is all of 6yrs, but was still mesmerised by this book - "Look, Mum! Archie is just like how I used to be, wearing the tiger dress forever after reading tiger book and getting a tiger toy! He even wears it to the nursery. Bet his Mum washes it after quietly taking it off him when he is sleeping, just like how you used to!". Apparently, the pictures in the book have so much to tell!

I think it is just the right size for a bedtime snug fit. And the scenes (and behaviour!) would be so very familiar to kids of similar age to chatter about before nodding off. Wonder how many parents are going to have to say "No!" to endless read-again requests!

Verdict : Simple, lovely bedtime read.
Borrow and read? Yes. Yes. Yes.
Buy for keeps?: Maybe not.
Buy for Presents?: Yes if BookPeople sold it, or perhaps in the school book fair, I just happen to know too many Archies :o)

Bakingtins · 24/07/2013 17:27

Thank you Mumsnet for our copy. DS2 (3.1) really enjoyed it and we've read it several times already. He is enthusiastic about joining in with Archie shouting "no" and it did make him think when Archie started missing out and feeling sad. Lovely illustrations which we both appreciated.

HazelDormouse · 25/07/2013 13:46

A lovely picture book. Archie is very cute and endearing. My ds rather likes saying Archie's lines of 'no' and at the end 'yes'. It is good to get him involved with the telling of the story. Thank you once more Mumsnet.

Doogle2 · 25/07/2013 16:00

Thank you for the book. My 6 year old was very excited to receive this and has read it by himself. He loves the story and I think the pictures are lovely.

over40andmumtoone · 26/07/2013 19:07

What a lovely book! and with a great message behind it and very apt for my son who is at the NO! stage for everything. We've really enjoyed reading this book, and you could see my son, aged just over 3 and half years, slowly grasping the idea that you can miss out on all sorts of nice things if you constantly say NO!

tandt5 · 29/07/2013 13:55

Thank you Mumsnet for our copy of No!
The book has been an instant hit with my 3 year-old daughter and my 5 year-old son.
I have to say No is not only Archie's favourite word but my kids' as well. This book gave them a wonderful opportunity to say and shout this word many times and see for themselves that it's not such a good idea to say it often. They are so happy to shout YES at the end and we usually discuss at length the storyline.
We all love the main character, the pictures are great and the story is long enough to grasp the main idea without kids losing interest.
A great book and I would highly recommend it to every parent who hears NO from a little one a bit too often.
