Male or female writers?

I've been looking through my books and all my favourites are by women . . . and a small handful by gay men. I also listen to audio books and I have realised I definitely prefer the narrator to be female.
Anyone else like this or am I a small-minded sexist?

Female all the way! Give me Barbara Pym over Tom Clancy any day (possibly an unfair comparison). And yes to gay men, as EF Benson is high on my list too.

That said, most of my favourite non-fiction is by men.

I love Patrick Gale.
I also loved the Armistead Maupin Tales of the city series.
I don't know EF Benson. What sort of books does he write?

EF Benson's best books are the Mapp and Lucia series. 1920s/1930s, very high camp. All vicious glares at polite tea parties and "none of that horrid thing that Freud called sex".

Just counted through my bookcase which is almost exactly divided into male and female writers.

I think a list of my favourite authors would feature more men than women though.

I tend to read more books by women than men but that's not intentional. It's just the way it happens. I've no aversion to a book by a man, but I don't like adventure stories (the kind of stuff my DF reads). Patrick Gale's books are lovely - another fan here :)

Funnily enough, DH tends to read quite a lot of books by women too :o

Most of the books on my shelves are by men. My favourite writers are all male, I only just realised this. Neil Gaiman, John Niven, Ian Rankin, Chuck Palanuick. Would be nice to put some women on that list!

Other than the great Jane herself, I nearly always go for male writers. The only other female I can think of that I rate over a number of books is Isabel Allende.

I've read 24 books this year, 19 by women and 5 by men, so I agree with you OP!

Many of my favourite books are written by women with some exceptions, eg Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Atonement, The Power and The Glory, Tess of the d'Urbevilles. I like Bill Bryson and Nick Hornby too.

I forgot to add that I am reading a book by a man at the moment - The War Of The Worlds by H G Wells. Nearly finished it, utterly gripping stuff :o

Mostly men. It's not intentional, but I most of my favourite author are men and when you read you're not constantly aware of the sex of the writer.

Half and half for me too I reckon, though at a guess (without going to my "books I've read" list) I would say probably slighter more male authors.

Mostly men, the women are Janet Evanovitch, Sue Grafton, Faye Kellerman, Alex Barclay and a handful of others. I mostly read crime books.
