Read a book a few months ago, meant to read it again and forgot to note the title or author. Its about a young couple who inherit his grandparents house which has just been released to them by the Ministry of Defence, it was in one of those world war two villiages which were emptied during the war. Its got a bit of a supernatural twist to it. Anyone ?

I don't know it but am watching with interest, it sounds good.

Do you remember what the cover was like?

UniqueAndAmazing · 23/06/2013 22:22

and where did you get the book? library?
is it new or old?
and yes, cover?

SarahAndFuck · 23/06/2013 22:25

It wasn't The Greatcoat was it?

UniqueAndAmazing · 24/06/2013 16:39

"In the winter of 1952, Isabel Carey moves to the East Riding of Yorkshire with her husband Philip, a GP. Woken by intense cold one night, she discovers an old RAF greatcoat hidden in the cupboard. Sleeping under it for warmth, she starts to dream. And not long afterwards, while her husband is out, she is startled by a knock at her window. "

it jolly well could be!

Rowgtfc72 · 24/06/2013 21:22

From the library and cant remember the cover. Not The Greatcoat but that sounds like a good read and I may give it a go!. This was definitely a couple who receive a letter to say they can have this old house back. The whole village has been done up sympathetically, the couple argue a lot, there are secrets and supernatural events. Its all set in an old evacuated world war two village but I think the couple originally live in London. I vaguely know where I was stood in the library (it can only be on one of five shelves!) and am going to look tomorrow whilst shouty DD is at school.

hope it's there!

Rowgtfc72 · 25/06/2013 11:42

Not there. Man who was wigging in while I was talking to the woman at the desk asked if they could call up my borrowing history, but apparently I cant do that. May try google.

Can you remember anything else about it?

The couple's names? Name of the village? What year it was set in?

Rowgtfc72 · 26/06/2013 20:27

Set recently. He had an affair with a foreign lady. Village had a manor house and a pub and the whole community were expected to come together for regular meetings. The woman in the story was a childrens book illustrator and he was a computer geeky guy. I could tell you the whole story apart from any very obvious identifying features! If I ever find it Im buying the damn thing this time!

tillyfernackerpants · 26/06/2013 21:26

Rowgtfc72 · 26/06/2013 21:39

Brodmaw Bay by FG Cottam?

He was a computer geek and she illustrated books and the whole thing went supernaturally weird at the end.

But it wasn't a grandparents house as far as I recall, they bought it after their son was mugged in London and they felt safer moving to Cornwall.

If it's not this one, read it anyway, FG Cottam is fantastic.

Rowgtfc72 · 27/06/2013 12:23

That sounds a good book, will look for that. Alas, not Cornwall.

Marking place as I want to read the book when we find out what it is!

SarahAndFuck · 27/06/2013 12:59

When you say it was one of five shelves, what shelves were they?

What section of the alphabet or classification of book?

tillyfernackerpants · 27/06/2013 13:09

Hardbacks are awkward for reading!

It's starting to drive me a bit bonkers as well! Can you remember anything about the title? Number of words? Main colour of the cover?

We will find this book

tillyfernackerpants · 27/06/2013 14:16

Think I may have found it - seems to be ticking most of the boxes anyway!

The Secrets of St Dee?

UniqueAndAmazing · 27/06/2013 14:48

Brodmaw Bay reviews says it turns out like the Wicker Man, which I think you would have commented upon...

tillyfernackerpants · 28/06/2013 09:01

tillyfernackerpants · 28/06/2013 17:24

I did an advanced search on amazon, then went through about 10 pages of results before finding it Grin. You provided so much detail I thought it would've been easier tbh!

It does sound good though, have it on reserve at my library!

MerlinFromCamelot · 28/06/2013 18:18

Shame it is not on kindle. Sounds really good.

Rowgtfc72 · 28/06/2013 20:06
