Morning all,

As the old thread here is nearly full, I have created a shiny new one for your delight and delectation.

Sign in and update your progress here!

I'm Cardiff and I've nearly finished book 16, so I'm very behind as to be in track we should be approaching 25 by now. Where is everyone else up to?

OP posts:
MegBusset · 19/10/2013 15:00
  1. Bleeding Edge - Thomas Pynchon

Pynchon takes on Sept 11 and New York. Sad and funny and wise, very readable by his standards and very very good.

PerksOfBeingNorthern · 19/10/2013 19:05
  1. Elin Hildebrand - The Castaways
  2. Ruth Hanka Eigner - The Mousetrap
  3. Gillian Flynn - Sharp Objects Grin

  1. harry potter #3 was finished yesterday. this one is my fave film out of all of them and the book actually had me Grin when i finished it Blush

  2. the hunger games #1. reading it now as the 2nd film comes out in a few weeks and i cant remember much of the first film at all. chapter 8 so far. chapter 16 is my target for tonight

p.s. are we up to this challenge next year too? its certainly helped keep me on track as i dont think it would have read this many otherwise. i like seeing what others are reading too nosey Grin

PerksOfBeingNorthern · 20/10/2013 12:32

I blame you all for the fact my to read pile has only got bigger Grin
Anyone else? Cardiff has your pile beside your bed been halved?!

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 20/10/2013 12:37

Wednesdaynext, my mum has read and re-read Ivanhoe, it's one of her favourites. I think I tried once when I was about 15 and couldn't get into it, so I'm no help at all am I?!

InLoveWithDavidTennant, yes yes, we must do it next year, because I'm certainly not going to make it to 50 this year so I will have to try again!!

  1. Little Children by Tom Perrota. A character study of sexual frustration in American suburbia. Have just discovered it is a film with Kate Winslet as well. Very readable.

Hahaha!

I think I've actually been given more books than I've read this year Perks. And I've started borrowing books from the library as well, so there's still close to 100 in the Stack.

I am most definite up for next year. I definitely won't reach 50 next year as I have a very busy year ahead at uni but will join the thread with a lower target if that's ok.

I can't remember who runs the Goodreads group but I am inspired by the Winter/Christmas challenge. Is it Duchess?

I struggling with reading at the moment but hopefully will get back on track with it over the next few weeks. Otherwise I won't meet this years target!!!

49 The Mist in the Mirror by Susan Hill

It's a rattling good ghost story and really well written with a rather old-fashioned feel to it which I like.

Almost there! I'm now about halfway through The Night Circus, which I'm really enjoying. It's rather like a fairy tale for adults.

Duchess of Malfi I think that I might put The Blackwater Lightship on my to-read pile after your recommendation. I've read and enjoyed The Testament of Mary and The Master.

AnonYonimousBird Did you enjoy The Remains of the Day? I loved it, though it's a while since I read it. One of those books you can really lose yourself in.

PerksOfBeingNorthern What did you think of Sharp Objects? I've read Gone Girl, is Sharp Objects as good?

InLoveWithDavidTennant I'm definitely up for doing this again next year and already have a long list of books I want to read, largely as a result of recommendations on this thread, so thanks to everyone for sharing what they've read.

yay Grin so glad we're all up for another challenge.

to those that havent, and say they wont read, 50 books either this year or next. i dont think it matters if you hit 50. i think 50 is a very reasonable number but the beauty of this challenge is that you can set your own personal target... 30, 40, 50, 100, 200... it doesnt matter... it gets us all reading. we all read at different speeds and life gets busy.

  1. the hunger games #1 - just finished! enjoyed it a lot actually. did they change the ending in the film? or have i just completely forgotten what happened? Confused

  2. harry potter #4 - going to visit my dm on tuesday so im starting it then and giving myself a read free day tomorrow

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 20/10/2013 19:47

blimey... didnt mean to waffle on quite as much as that Blush sorry

WednesdayNext · 20/10/2013 19:49

Thanks Cardiff, no help at all, but I'll probably start something else Grin

funambulist · 21/10/2013 10:38

50 The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

tumbletumble · 21/10/2013 10:57

I'm definitely up for next year. I've read more this year than I have for years. I'm a bit Blush that it took a MN thread to make me do it!

  1. The Accidental Husband by Jane Green. Good reliable chick lit.

  2. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I loved this! Thank you to everyone up thread who recommended it.

PerksOfBeingNorthern · 21/10/2013 22:15

funambulist I enjoyed Sharp Objects although was a little uncomfortable to read in places - think I am becoming overly squeamish Grin Raced through it to see if I was correct about the murderer...I wasn't!
Well worth 99p on Kindle if you have one, just bought Dark Places and Gone Girl for 99p each too.

funambulist · 22/10/2013 12:02

PerksOfBeingNorthern I do have a kindle. Thanks for letting me know that Dark Places and Sharp Objects are just 99p. I have been dithering about whether to buy them, but at that price the decision is easy.

  1. The Radleys - Matt Haig

Liked it. Had very short chapters though, which never fails to annoy me.

minsmum · 25/10/2013 14:13

68 Beatrice goes to brighton - M C Beaton
69 Deborah goes to Dover - M C Beaton.
Lots going on at the moment so reading stuff that I don't have to think about

MegBusset · 25/10/2013 18:29
  1. Annapurna - Maurice Herzog

Another mountaineering book - this time an account of the first ever summit of a mountain above 8,000m, in 1950. An absolutely thrilling book and a fine testament to the bravery of the men involved (both Frenchmen and Sherpas).

DuchessofMalfi · 25/10/2013 18:51

Book 89 - Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult. I enjoyed this book very much. Kept me turning the pages. Gripping stuff. I'd forgotten how good a storyteller Jodi Picoult is.

DuchessofMalfi · 25/10/2013 19:01

funambulist - hope you enjoy The Blackwater Lightship, it was amazing. I picked up some short stories of his in the library yesterday - The Empty Family, and will give those a go. Wasn't that keen on Brooklyn, on first read but will re-read and may try The Heather Blazing soon.

WednesdayNext · 26/10/2013 09:01
  1. "Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott. Finally finished it. Some parts of it were good, but it was a bit too waffly for me. I'm glad to have finished it
Foosyerdoos · 26/10/2013 13:19
  1. The big over easy - Jasper Fforde
  2. Hallucinations - Oliver Sacks
