**Trashy Jilly Cooper alert**

OK it's complete trash, but don't suppose anyone is reading the new Jilly Cooper? I have always had a bit of a secret thing about her books, but am really quite appauled by this one. Am not a prude but am totally shocked that she has included graphic scenes between Year 9 pupils??? It felt very wrong and very uncomfortable reading it and have now given up on the book!

Anyone admit to reading it?

cool does she have a new one? sounds like just the thing for post birth reading

still nothing beats Octavia though

I gave up on Jilly Cooper around 10 years ago. she seemed to want to pander to "correct" or "trendy " thinking, but somehow none of it rings true.
She should have stopped after Rivals.

Ok I'll own up, I bought it in the airport on the way to a recent sun holiday. total trash and apportions far too much intelligence and intrigue to a load of teens. And yes far too much dodgy sex amongst kids to make for comfortable reading - I mean you just don't want to read about kids doing it!

Actually one sentance in it really disturbed me - the main carachter found herself in a dodgy drug-dealer/pimps house where she says there was a kiddie porn movie on in the background. that's unnecassary enough but she phrased it as a man and a woman 'enjoying' sex with a little girl which just turned my stomach tbh.

I too have abandoned it before the end.

Went looking for a thread on this as have just finished the book.

I actually feel very cross for 3 reasons:

  1. I will never get those hours of my life back
  2. Did she get 2 manuscripts muddled up? Very strange plot (for want of a better word) machinations.
  3. the worst. Found the comic overtones to the kiddy porn/abusers situation extremely distasteful. These were comedy villains FFS!

Actually felt so cross I nearly wrote off a 'disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' type letter.

OH NO, OH NO.... I was depending on this for my holiday reading next week. I'm the first to admit she hasn't got any better over the years but still enjoyed them (Prudence and The man who mad Husbands jealous my favs). I think there is a new Cathy Kelly out too, I'm texting dh now to get him to pick it up at the airport on the way home Grin

REading it at the moment - also very surprised at the sex between a 13 yr old and an older boy. Yes - I know they do it but still.

Will probably read to the end though!

YohoAhoy · 20/06/2006 15:17

maddie I'm so sorry - I should have included a spoiler alert.

Hate people giving bits away when I haven't read the book. Blush

Undoubtedly the worst book I have ever read, god knows why I forced myself to finish it - I just couldn't believe it wasn't going to improve! Really, really crap - all that bollocks about the national papers being interested in school rugby matches FGS! Idiotic plot, appalling characters - not even one-dimensional, they were all so similar and so bloody many of them it was impossible to remember who was who. RANT!
So agree with Nightynight - it was all downhill after Rivals.

fairyjay · 20/06/2006 15:25

In the middle of reading it. It hasn't gripped me at all though. Really disappointing - glad I didn't save it for my hols Grin
