Have you got 1/2 way through yet? I found the second half much better.

The ending is rubbish. Most overrated book of last year.

I have got to the point that she is alive a writing her diary... he has his lawyer.

The whole plot is on wikipedia!

The very end is annoying, but tidal of the powerlessness people seem to feel in the US legal system.

I thought it was one obviously written for film/TV. I read it for book group, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it might be!

I am 170 pages in, have to get it finished for book club, starting to think I would rather eat my own feet...

How on earth did it get on to the Prize-that-is-no-longer-called-the -Orange Prize long list? My jaw keeps scraping along the floor at just how badly it's written in a way that reminds me of both the truly ghastly Sister and the awful, awful, awful bollocks that was Before I Go To Sleep.

Ah well. Perhaps I'm just bitter and envious that she is earning so much money for such trite rubbish .

I don't usually enjoy hyped-up books so I read the plot summary on Wikipedia, and it sounded awfully predictable to me. I mean, you expect a "twist" in this kind of novel, so it wouldn't be hard to guess what it would be here.

Maybe I've read too much and I just know all the plots now

I got a free preview of this on my Kobo and can't get past the first few pages - thought it was going to be unputdownable! Reading this thread, I don't think I'll bother to continue!!

I completely agree with you on Before I Go To Sleep, mimble :o Awful, just awful. Hated it. But I liked Gone Girl. It took a very long time to get going, and I almost gave up, but it came through in the end. Good ending, I thought. I like books where the ends aren't necessarily tied up neatly. They deserved one another!

I've got Sister on my tbr shelf. I hope it's not as bad as all that :o

I think people were dissapointed with Gone Girl because the end wasn't all neat, tidy and concluded.

Sister is good but the second Rosamund Lupton - Afterwards - is much better imo.

Seriously, give SJ Bolton a go. I've read her whole back catalogue in the last few weeks. Really good reads even if she does have a thing about churches and female characters having some kind of disability/disfigurement (nothing wrong with that obv, but one pops up in every book).

Dp and dd1 have both just read, 'Gone Girl' and said it was ridiculous. I don't think I shall be trying it, as I have a very low tolerance for crap writing.

I wouldn't say it was ridiculous but I totally lean towards books set in the UK simply because I think to really get ito a book you have to be able to place yourself there and I find that very difficult to do with books set in America.

I recently read Covenant by Dean Crawford and it's really good but I couldn't understand why a British writer set most of his book in the US. I was a bit meh about that.

I enjoyed Gone Girl, but it's very much a piece of genre fiction - you have to suspend disbelief. I was surprised to see it on the Woman's Prize longlist.

Right, well I finished it last week and I will come back and say that because I am totally contrary I rather liked the last 100 pages or so (obviously totally against expectation ). As this is already covered by a spoiler alert I can say cheerfully that they were two of the nastiest characters in a book I've come up against in a long time and was delighted they were each pinned each to the other for ever.

The only thing I liked was the ending, anything else would have been far too 'Hollywood' imo.

SO over rated though and boring
