I've just been reading "Can't you sleep, Little Bear" to dd's and I nearly cried! Silly sentimental moment about giving your children the moon!

What innocuous(sp!) children's books have had you blubbing?

Has anyone ever read "The Mouse and His Child" by Russell Hoban - unbearably sad.

Marina · 04/05/2006 12:57

No, but we love Russell Hoban's Frances books dino.
The Happy Prince! Have only read that once with ds and blubbed shamelessly at the end.

PinkKerPlink · 04/05/2006 12:58

Well I must be incredibly hard faced because I dont cry at any

I do cry at verses in birthday cards though, and even cried at some of the cards my Gran got recently. i think i upset herShock

I agree on the Railway Children. That bit where she shouts 'Daddy, oh my Daddy' gets me every time (in fact I'm welling up just thinking about it!!!)

Oscar Wilde's The Selfish Giant always makes me howl.

bakedpotato · 04/05/2006 13:06

The Runaway Bunny
Goodnight Moon
I Want To See the Moon (incredibly touching, even though the premise a small child wakes up in the middle of the night demanding entertainment gives me the shudders)

for me the killer is Holly and Ivy (Rumer Godden). I put it down to the timetravel sensation of encountering a book you almost forgot about. Add in Christmas/ snow/poverty/orphans and so on... sob

KTeePee · 04/05/2006 13:10

Dogger for me too....

blueshoes · 04/05/2006 13:25

Any story by Hans Christian Andersen - the Little Mermaid, the Little Match Stick Girl, the Gift of the Magi, the Little Red Shoes, the Robin and the Rose - gosh I feel suicidal now ...

Troutpout · 04/05/2006 14:35

Once there were Giants by Martin Waddell

Pixel · 04/05/2006 21:18

Plain Jack by K M Peyton. I tried reading it to dd a couple of times but by the end I was literally too choked up to speak.

singersgirl · 05/05/2006 13:59

"Dogger" definitely.
"Anne of Green Gables" in lots of bits.
"The Railway Children" most of all. "Daddy, oh, my Daddy..." Too much for someone who lost their father as a child.

singersgirl · 05/05/2006 14:00

And "Peepo". For some reason I always used to get teary at "And a mother with a baby just like him.."

MamaG · 05/05/2006 14:03

me too singersgirl, I read peepo whilst on the loo this morning. on my own Blush

dinosaure · 05/05/2006 17:24

Has anyone read The Dragon Machine? There's a bit in that that always makes me well up a bit - when the little boy wakes up to find the dragons have all gone.

kate100 · 05/05/2006 18:16

Nothing - Mick Inkpem
Guess How Much I love you
The Velveteen Rabbit
Dogger
Also, have a soft spot for Alfie, as my brothers hair was as mad as that as a child and of course he was wearing the seventies clothes, especially Alfie Gets in First, when he cries and cries and cries.

FrannyandZooey · 05/05/2006 18:30

Ooh Batters Shock

"Remember this - it's the way life should be"

[huge blubbing emoticon]

not sure if I have quoted it right but it was ages ago I read it - what is it called? I would love to get it for ds

Tatties · 05/05/2006 18:50

This thread is lovely but it has me crying Sad Dp will be in a minute, he'll think I'm mad!

FrannyandZooey · 05/05/2006 18:55

OOH OOH and The Bunyip of Berkeley's Creek. An ugly creature goes off to hide "and be as handsome as I like". Then he meets a lady Bunyip! Cue violins, franny sobs, etc etc

gladbag · 05/05/2006 19:40

talking of The Snowman....
When The Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs is hugely emotional (not that I've read it to ds yet, nuclear war being a bit much at 2...)

lionhearted · 05/05/2006 19:42

Then there's this: \link{http://amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099455951/qid=1146854241/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-7234880-6026045\strange little tale}
