Unabashed chick lit fan wants holiday reading suggestions

Going away soon for a week - would like something entertaining (but not too demanding) to read in the evenings when the lo's are asleep; over a bottle of wine.

Have enjoyed authors like Jane Green etc previously.

Any suggestions?

just read one called 'are you my mother?' by louise voss which is chicklit-ish but has abit more meat to it.really good!

handlemecarefully · 02/05/2006 23:37

That sounds good - I like chick lit with a bit more substance rather than pure candy floss iykwim!

I like Jennifer Crusie, especially \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0330426494/qid=1146609573/sr=8-8/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i8_xgl/203-2456032-4894369\Welcome to Temptation} and Serena Mackesie (sp?), especially \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099414759/qid=1146609638/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/203-2456032-4894369\Virtue}. Serena Mackesie's new \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0099414767/qid=1146609704/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_3_1/203-2456032-4894369\one} is pretty good too. Both authors use proper English and can write dialogue that you can actually imagine people saying, two things that are often lacking in chick lit IMO.

Books by Amy Tan. Engaging and easy reading without being trashy. The stories really pull you in like a really good film.

kipper22 · 03/05/2006 09:33

Mike Gayle is excellent - a good twist on chick-lit (by a man and aimed towards women and 'softer' men I think!)

pooka · 03/05/2006 09:35

Second Jennifer Crusie - liked Fast Women.
Also - Emily Barr (Backpackers/Baggage/Plan B).

NikkiH · 03/05/2006 10:18

How about Jill Mansell, Catherine Alliot and Sophie Kinsella - they're a similar style to Jane Green. Also second Marian Keyes.

For a more substantial but gripping read I've enjoyed books by Barbara Erskine and Diana Gabaldon.

Enjoy your holiday!

MrsSpoon · 03/05/2006 16:00

I don't really do 'chick-lit' but thoroughly enjoyed May Contain Nuts by John O'Farrell.

Not 'chick-lit' but A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian is fantastic and an easy read/page turner, in fact wish I had kept it for a holiday when I could have devoted more time to it.

Hayls · 03/05/2006 16:03

Second Mike Gayle and Marian Keyes (my fave) and also thoroughly recommend Jodu Picoult

MrsSpoon · 03/05/2006 16:05

Jodi Picoult is fab, Plain Truth is my favourite so far, I don't consider her chick-lit but I suppose she is.

bundle · 03/05/2006 16:07

I don't really like chicklit but could recommend authors like Carol Shields and Anne Tyler

festiveface · 05/05/2006 09:36

read a minor indiscretion by carole matthews =, it was a great easy read really enjoyable.

InigoMontoya · 05/05/2006 20:56

~Second Catherine Alliott and Jodi Piccoult, also HUGE vote for Diana Gabaldon though she's not really chick lit. Also my usual favourite that I always bang on about - Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels, can't be beat IMO.
India Knight and Rafaella Barker are funny, and the chick lit queen - Jilly Cooper - has a new one out? Haven't liked any of hers much since Polo though.

Piffle · 05/05/2006 20:58

Not the new Marian Keyes
Oh its dire...

acnebride · 06/05/2006 20:15

i like anna maxted

avoid joan o'neill

katyrocks · 14/05/2006 21:00

agree with InigoMontoya , Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum novels are an absolute holiday must!

SecondhandRose · 14/05/2006 21:07

Another vote for Sophie Kinsella - can you keep a secret.

Have you read the Da Vinci Code? Read that b4 the film comes out.

WideWebWitch · 14/05/2006 21:10

Jilly Cooper's Pandora, she got massively back on form with that one imo. Fab stuff. Also Catherine Alliott, start with The Old Girl Network and then read the rest. Great fun.

littlerach · 14/05/2006 21:13

Yet another vote foe Janet Evanovich.

Also raffaella Barker has a new one, Perfect Life..

Margeret Forster is v v v good.

Ledodgyherring · 14/05/2006 21:15

His and Hers is brilliant by Mike gayle

Adorabelle · 14/05/2006 21:16

White Teeth by Zadie Smith is Fab, don't know if
she has written anything else. Also another nod to the Da Vinci Code - Gripping.
