50 Book Challenge in 2013. Who's with me?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 05/01/2013 16:58

Tidying up after Christmas it has come to my attention that I have nearly 100(!!) paperbacks in stacks down the side of my bed waiting to be read. BlushBlush
I am going to challenge myself to try and read at least 50 of them this year. That's nearly one a week so I am going to have to really apply myself and stop faffing around and doing other things when I could be enjoying a good book.
I wondered if anyone else would like to join me? We can post what we are reading and then post when we have finished each book and what's next.
I know I would love to hear what others are reading and enjoying (or not enjoying) so I can go out and buy more books in a few months time!
My first book of the year is President Down by Terence Strong about spies and terrorists which my dad lent me about a year ago! I'm only about 20 pages in, but so far so good.

Just finished book 5 which was Skin and Bones by Tom Bale. I discovered him last year and have read his other stuff, all great action thrillers. This was, I think, his first novel and it showed. While it had the plot and characterisation of the others it really needed editing down by a quarter.
Then took a new book to read while waiting for DS this morning and had my first "fail", Guilt by Association by Marcia Clark. Read three chapters and gave up.
We have really good libraries round here so I have a pile of nice newly chosen paperbacks to go at. CJ Box next I think.

TheLateMrPamuk · 26/01/2013 14:49

Finished Roadrage this morning.I really liked it.
Trying to find my next book now fancy something nice after two Stephen King books. Grin

  1. The Unit
  2. The Long Walk
  3. Roadrage
MaureenShit · 26/01/2013 15:57

im reading the Judith o reilly - its shit

noddyholder · 26/01/2013 17:02

I can't imagine you reading that its the do gooders book isn't it? I am reading narcopolis

FleurPearl · 26/01/2013 18:21

Can I join please? Know it's a bit late but this looks like it will give me the boot up the backside I need to get through my "to read" list! So far this year I've only read 3, the last Hunger Games book and Still Missing by Chevy Stevens. I tried the Time Travellers Wife but I just cannot get in to it. Does that count though or do you have to read the whole book? I'm now looking at A visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan.

So that's potentially 4 books in a month. Think I need to get my read on!!

thejoblot · 26/01/2013 18:24

oohhhh can I play? Been a bit busy the last year or 2, so there are loads of great reads I have to catch up with. Easing myself in with the light stuff, just finished the "Hunger Games" trilogy & about to start the "His Dark Materials" with plans on the "A Song of Fire and Ice" saga. Think that will cover sci fi this year, hoping to throw in some grown up reading as well.

I've just finished book 5. So far I've read the first 4 books in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews and the Snow Child. I'm not sure when I'll get to read the 5th book in the Kate Daniels series though because it doesn't seem to be out on Kindle and it's expensive as a paperback.
Just started Fearless by Christine Rains. It seems a little short though so not sure if I should count it. I think it might be intended for a YA audience as I'm finding it a bit simplistic for my taste so far.

Galaxymum · 26/01/2013 19:41

Just finished my 4th book The Paris Wife. I enjoyed it, quite diferent from my usual reads. Now starting another Jojo Moyes book.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 27/01/2013 09:05

Morning all, I have finished book 4 last night. It was The Doomsday Prophecy by Scott Mariani. It wasn't particularly original, there was an ex-SAS soldier with an attitude, a missing biblical archaeologist and some tenuous religious links to a terrorist attack and the end of the world. Don't get me wrong there wasn't anything wrong with it, I just felt like I had already read it before!

I will start book 5 shortly. It is City Of Lies by RJ Ellory. I'm not confident I'll get on with it TBH, I tried one of his last year and just couldn't get into it. The blurb on this one looks quite good though so I will give it a try.

Can't believe some of you have read ten or eleven books already. When do you sleep?! Ten books in a month puts you on target to read 120 this year, more than double our original target!!

Finished the Dawn French book, so that's 6 down 44 to go!! Book 7 will be Paul Coelho 'Veronika Decides to Die', which I'm looking forward to reading.

On the fence about 'Oh dear silvia' - it took a while to get into and I found the end predictable, but there were a couple of good twists!

thefourcees enjoy The Expats - I really liked that one!

PerksOfBeingNorthern what did you think of 'The Alchemist'? I've got that on my pile waiting to be read!

MrsMaryCooper enjoy Life of Pi- it's a favourite of mine!

HopeForTheBest I've got Bright Young Things on my kindle to read. I was looking forward to it-- is it really that bad? The 90s is "my" time too!!

MrsMaryCooper · 27/01/2013 19:44

No 11 was While they were sleeping - Andy Leeks

It wasn't very good.

I've started No 12 The Last Werewolf - Glen Duncan. It's not what I was expecting (and much better written!) so I'm enjoying it.

Cardiff the reason I am at 12 already is because I have a broken arm so all the long journeys I have made this year to see have been on the train rather than the car so plenty of reading time!

I do read a lot anyway, though.

  1. Edge Of The Orison - Iain Sinclair
  2. The Year 1000 - Robert Lacey
  3. The Clay Machine Gun - Victor Pelevin
  4. V For Vendetta - Alan Moore & David Lloyd
  5. Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury

Finished F451 in two days thanks to escaping from the DC overnight to a spa hotel!

MegBusset · 27/01/2013 21:05

Now starting part one of Peter Ackroyd's History of England. Longer than the last few books at 450-odd pages so might slow me down a little!

LittleMissFantabulous · 27/01/2013 21:51

I'll join in. I'm three books in so far:

1: Cold Days - Jim Butcher.
2: The Blade Itself - Joe Abercrombie.
3: The Painted Man - Peter V Brett.

Reading is pure escapism for me so I'm afraid it's probably going to be fantasy/sci fi/murder mystery trash all the way:o

Allalonenow · 27/01/2013 22:14

Book 4 ~ Wait for Me by Elizabeth Naughton.
A certainty for the Bad Sex Award, and with more corpses than an Agatha Christie boxed set, WFM is not my normal type of reading matter, but I was lured by the good Amazon reviews.
The best I can say is that it was a quick read. Too much repetition, and not enough pace, tension or real action, the many murders were all reported. I could go on, but you get my drift.

Hoping to find something enthralling this time.

daisygatsby · 28/01/2013 11:40

hello everyone - im going to join in too. im a pretty fast reader, infact i think too quick , as I often forget books as soon as Ive read them. so far this year i have read

  1. Why be happy when you could be normal, Jeanette Winterson
  2. Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn
3,Mothers Tale , Camilla Noli - if anyone else has read this I'd be interested to hear what you think

Ive just put This is Where I leave you (i love the title!) by jonathan troper onto my kindle, so thats next.

NicknameTaken · 28/01/2013 12:39

How did you like the Jeanette Winterson book, daisy? I love Oranges are not the only fruit, and I'm hesitating about whether to try this one too.

daisygatsby · 28/01/2013 14:22

nickname - it was quite enjoyable although I didnt like it as much as I was expecting too, given the positive reviews I'd heard. but its certainly an interesting , well written tale, and easy to read. i actually havent read anything of hers apart from Oranges. I think if you liked that, youll like it.

PerksOfBeingNorthern · 28/01/2013 17:47

WednesdayNext A few quotes in 'The Alchemist' struck a chord with me, I highlighted them on my kindle and don't do that very often! I wasn't blown away by it though, it got a bit too preachy towards the end. It is quite short and easy to read...and was free Blush Update on here if you get around to reading it!

NicknameTaken · 28/01/2013 18:00

Thanks, daisy, I might give it a shot.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 28/01/2013 18:43

So RJ Ellory lasted about 50 pages before I got the hump! I just don't like the way he writes so I have given up. If I've got to read 50 books this year I'm not going to waste time wrestling with stuff I don't like.

Next in the stack is Brute Force by Andy McNab Blush Hardly a literary masterpiece, but fun and I should finish it in a few days!

I really need to stop noting down what everyone else is reading and looking books up on Amazon!

velcro · 28/01/2013 19:57

Gave up on Persuasion by Jane Austen. I do t know if it was me or the kindle version but the sentences made no sense

Just finished Pompeii by Mary Beard. Interesting topic but was slightly dismayed as I thought it was a book about the eruption and it wasn't

Also read Agatha Raisin& the Love from Hell
And
The Secret Supper Club

Now reading Side Jobs by Jim Butcher

velcro · 28/01/2013 19:59

That should have read don't and not do t. Am making as much sense as Persuasion apparently!
