50 Book Challenge in 2013. Who's with me?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 05/01/2013 16:58

Tidying up after Christmas it has come to my attention that I have nearly 100(!!) paperbacks in stacks down the side of my bed waiting to be read. BlushBlush
I am going to challenge myself to try and read at least 50 of them this year. That's nearly one a week so I am going to have to really apply myself and stop faffing around and doing other things when I could be enjoying a good book.
I wondered if anyone else would like to join me? We can post what we are reading and then post when we have finished each book and what's next.
I know I would love to hear what others are reading and enjoying (or not enjoying) so I can go out and buy more books in a few months time!
My first book of the year is President Down by Terence Strong about spies and terrorists which my dad lent me about a year ago! I'm only about 20 pages in, but so far so good.

48 to go - for some reason i equated a year with 52 (weeks) rather than 50 (books) Blush

TallulahTwinkle · 15/01/2013 14:05

Can I join in?

Just been looking for some ideas to spend my Amazon vouchers on.

This year so far I have read:
The Tommyknockers Stephen King
Standing in another man's grave. Ian Rankin
So much for that. Lionel Shriver

About to start The Unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry.

Going to browse through this thread to get more ideas Grin

TheLateMrPamuk · 15/01/2013 14:45

I loved Harold Fry.

MrsMaryCooper · 15/01/2013 16:55

Finished The Woodcutter by Kate Delaney last night. It was clever but I never really got into one.

Now on number 6 The Crossing Places - Elly Griffiths (1st in Ruth Galloway series)

I have never thought that I read very much, clearly I do very little else!

moonshine · 15/01/2013 17:52

Nickname Taken - The Emporer of All Maladies looks fascinating and I've added it to my wishlist - thank you!

Snapespeare Did you enjoy all the other Ben Aaronvitch books? I started reading 'Rivers of London' but really hated the first few chapters so gave up (and I rarely give up with a book) Do you think it is a slow burner or, if I haven't 'got it' after the first few chapters, that I shouldn't bother trying again?

minsmum · 15/01/2013 20:59

Well I have just finished Swimming home by Deborah Levy. Fascinating book, not at all what I expected, beautifully written and I can see why it was on the Booker short list. I wasn't sure when I was reading it at the beginning but I think it will stay with me.
Not quite sure what to read for book 4. After sitting here for about 20 minutes I think it will be Die for me by Karen Rose as my brain feels full.
I am trying to read The War poems of Siegfried Sassoon one a day as well.

Nettyporthole · 15/01/2013 21:55

I'm up for this - but for me, ten of my 50 have to be in Dutch since I moved to the Netherlands two years ago and am trying to learn the language! (So expect trash for those ones)

Reading Stephen King's 11-22-63 at the moment and have just finished the very girly book The Playgroup by Janey Fraser. I tend to just pick up the book my boss has just finished reading since books are astronomically priced over here. God bless Amazon!

missbennett · 15/01/2013 22:10

Well I've finished The Bradshaw Variations. Either I didn't get it or it was pretty miserable and didn't really go anywhere. I think the best thing about it was brevityWink. Need to browse the shelves to pick the next one but that's five down so far!

PurpleStorm · 15/01/2013 22:12

Finished book number 1 - China Mieville: Embassytown

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 16/01/2013 09:04

So I have finished my second book

  1. The Brightest Star In The Sky - Marian Keyes.

I really enjoyed it. It was really original and wasn't light and fluffy chick-lit at all. I got pretty emotionally involved towards the end.

My third book is The Gate House by Nelson DeMille. It is pretty massive, nearly 700 pages but so far I am really enjoying it. It is -3 here today so I think I will spend as much of the day as possible wrapped in a blanket, drinking tea and reading!

I need to stop lusting after other people's books on this thread. I saw my parents at the weekend and they gave me another two books that they had finished so I have added them to the Massive Stack. So even though I have read two books I have received two more!!

TheLateMrPamuk · 16/01/2013 09:38

Ohhh Cardiff, I really enjoyed Brightest Star too.
I'm on book 2 now, I've decided on The Hundred Year Old Man.
It looks promising and it was only 20p [ grin].

Thefourcees · 16/01/2013 11:57

Ok on to book no 4, going to be Stephen Kings The Long Walk. Ive been meaning to read this for a while, really enjoyed the last King book I read 11.22.63, I got The Long Walk as part of a 3 book Bachman collection with Roadwork and The Running Man so I'll move onto them after.

Allalonenow · 16/01/2013 12:11

Hope it's not too late to join in.
I've just finished my first book of the year The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman, it's about the final years of the Wars of the Roses from the Plantagenet viewpoint.

Good plot and characters! I found the frequent use of "gotten" irritating.

Snapespeare · 16/01/2013 12:58

moonshine well, it depends what you like. :) I hate giving up on a book... the only two that spring to mind that I didnt finish were the one i was reading while my mum was dying in a hospice - which was a trashy piece of nonsense set in a tv studio Hmm and salman rushdies 'Midnights children' which i just couldnt get started with. I think if you've endured a few chapters and it isn't doing t for you, put it to one side and read something you enjoy. reading should be a joy, not a chore.

NicknameTaken · 16/01/2013 13:15

moonshine, hope you enjoy The Emperor of Maladies. I now feel absurdly anxious in case you don't enjoy it.

About the Ben Aaronovitch books, I enjoyed them, but if you didn't enjoy the first few chapters of Rivers, it's probably not for you. It starts as it means to go on, if you seem what I mean, and you either enjoy the narrator's voice and the set-up or you don't.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 16/01/2013 14:36

TheFourCees - The Long Walk is one of my absolutely bestest stories ever. King at is absolute vintage best! Enjoy!

OP posts:
Galaxymum · 16/01/2013 17:06

TheFourCees - The Long Walk is my favourite Stephen King book. It's haunted me since I read it as a teen. Enjoy!

I'm rollicking through Me Before You, my 3rd book. Can't believe I haven't read it before. I love it. It's so brilliantly written.

MrsMaryCooper · 16/01/2013 18:26

Enjoyed No6 The Crossing Place so I'm now going to read the sequel

The Janus Stone - Elly Griffiths (number 7)

velcro · 16/01/2013 19:36

Ok finished
Whispers Under Ground by Ben Aaronovitch which I really enjoyed and was rather sad that I've got to wait for the next one to be published
The Man Who Wouldn't Stand Up by Jacob M Appel. Started well but got rather silly
Now reading The Secret Supper Club by Dana Bate

Alas my plan to clear my to-read backlog is being thwarted by my inability to stop buying kindle books. Purchased today Persuasion by Jane Austen & Morgue Drawer Four by Jutta Profijt

MegBusset · 16/01/2013 20:36
  1. Edge Of The Orison - Iain Sinclair read
  2. The Year 1000 - Robert Lacey read
  3. The Clay Machine Gun - Victor Pelevin started
minsmum · 16/01/2013 21:29

Velcro - I have all the Morgue Drawer books on my Kindle - not started them yet though

Schnarkle · 16/01/2013 22:58

I'm in, I've really neglected reading over the last few years. I'm way behind the times, so I'll use this year to catch myself up with the rest of the world Grin

  1. Tripwire Lee child
  2. Twilight (1)

Next on the list is Fahrenheit 451.

SuperScribbler · 17/01/2013 07:37

Hothouse Flower finished. It was not too good - the dialogue needed more crackers with all the cheese Smile

I'm now into The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Quirky title, quirky book.

minsmum · 17/01/2013 09:22

Die for Me finished so now to start book 5. Not sure what yet

velcro · 17/01/2013 10:42

minsmum I'll tell you what I think of the Morgue drawer book when I get to it though as I'm reading alphabetically by author it maybe some time

SuperScribbler I loved Guernsey Potato Pie & rather missed the characters when I finished it.
