Just finished Casual Vacancy. Cried my eyes out. About to start The Buddenbrock House bx Thomas Mann.

I loved LOTR and the Hunger Games, too.

ikltownofboothlehem · 01/01/2013 19:54

A Blink of the Screen by Terry Pratchett (collection of short stories). Next I'm starting the Inspector Morse collection - got the box set for Xmas from DH.

MikeLitorisHasChristmasLights · 01/01/2013 19:56

I have just finished Moon over Soho, the 2nd rivers of London book. I will probably read the 3rd one (whispers underground) next.

I'm waiting for the next Stuart McBride book to be released. Iirc its some time this month.

Cherrypi · 01/01/2013 20:07

I've just started Northanger Abbey for an alphabet challenge on Goodreads.

NicholasTeakozy · 01/01/2013 20:15

Oh I've just read Pratchett's 'Dodger' too but didn't think much of it. Sadly, I think the fine, fine days of Sam Vines and Captain Carrot are over now. :(

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2013 20:25

I didn't like 'Life Of Pi.'
First Hunger Games book was good but the other two were dreadful.
Have read the first two of the Rivers of London series but don't know if I'll bother with the third. They are a bit Jasper Fffffffffjorde-ish and I can't be doing with him.
I enjoyed 'Dominion.'

hugoagogo · 01/01/2013 20:27

I was looking forward to 'dodger' too, I gave up on pratchett for years, but have been making up for lost time lately. Sad

Hi acsec Grin that Caitlin Moran book is one of my faves!

I am reading a book DH got me fr crimbo called The Snow Child. Have just finished The Lighthouse by Alison Moore, bit depressing.

Best book read recently was El Narco, about Mexican Drug Wars was brill, true, and scary.

CheckpointCharlie · 01/01/2013 20:34

Ooh mike that is really really good that whispers underground book!

kikidee · 01/01/2013 20:35

I'm reading Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann and really enjoying it.

icapturethecastle · 01/01/2013 20:44

Just finished Prague Fatale by Philip Kerr it is a Bernie Gunther crime novel this is the 8th and I have enjoyed them all. About to start The Song of Achilles by
Madeline Miller.

Takver · 01/01/2013 21:11

Just finished The City and The City by China Mieville, very good, am going to look out for some others of his.

pointedlynoresolutions · 01/01/2013 21:25

After a serious vampire porn binge I am now reading the Dove of Death by Peter Tremayen (murder mysteries set in the 7th century AD) - not demanding, but enjoyable.

Have got a book of homage stories written in honour of Jack Vance's Dying Earth series lined up next.

Please don't give up on Ysabel, it all ties up in the end!

hugoagogo · 01/01/2013 21:34

Glad to hear it! Grin

I really try not to give up on books, but I bailed on a couple this year (glares at the casual vacancy) so I don't want it to become a habit.

UptoapointLordCopper · 01/01/2013 21:41

No thanks to whoever mentioned Northanger Abbey earlier on. It brought on a craving and I had to hunt high and low for the bloody book. Found it after going through the entire stock twice. Grin Going to read that next. And then Un Lun Dun.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2013 21:48

Make sure you read some 'proper' Gothic horror after Northanger Abbey. It's great fun. :)

borninastorm · 01/01/2013 22:06

Have just finished "Before I Go to Sleep " it was an incredible read. But the ending disappointed me a little. I wanted to know more.

CheckpointCharlie · 01/01/2013 22:07

Wow have a massive 'wish list' now. Will be busy for ages!

CelticPromise · 01/01/2013 22:47

Stuart- A Life Backwards by Alexander Masters. it's really good. I have a very promising stack of Christmas books lined up for after, also The Road which I might need to work up to!

highlandcoo · 01/01/2013 23:52

Bitter Water by Gordon Ferris, the second in the Douglas Brodie crime series. I read The Hanging Shed (no 1) a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. Liked the setting of post-war Glasgow, and was interested initially because GF used to work with DH years ago .. he's a good writer.

Also reading Parade's End; it's excellent but it's heavy going, and 900 pages, so have decided to have a pause after each of the four separate sections, and intersperse with something a bit lighter.

SirBoobAlot · 02/01/2013 00:02

Reading three at the moment, depending on what mood takes me. The Song Of Achilles, which is brilliant, and have read before, but wanted to read it on new kindle again. Is It Just Me, because Miranda Hart makes me giggle. And finally, Mad Bad and Sad, which is a history of women's psychiatric treatment from 1800 onwards, and is fascinating.

Debating buying Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies for kindle as well...

beanandspud · 02/01/2013 00:02

I am half-way through 'Home' by Manju Kapur which I am enjoying and I have a stack of C J Samson books to get through next.

I did get John Taylor's autobiography for Christmas though so I fear I may get distracted by my crush of the 80's Blush
