Chapter books you have known and loved

Ds wants to read chapter books at bedtime and we have exhausted the entire Milly-Molly-Mandy and Naughty Little Sister oeuvres.

He is just 3 so they need to be very unexciting and non-scary. We tried Joan Aiken's Necklace of Raindrops, which was mostly ok, but I think the magical parts went over his head. Any other chapter books you would recommend to be read to a very young child? The chapters in Winnie the Pooh are just a bit too long, and again the nuances go way over his head.

DD has just turned 4 and has enjoyed, so far, My Naughty Little Sister, Naughty Amelia Jane and Flat Stanley. She also has some Enid Blyton books that she enjoyes, and we are about to start Mrs Pepperpot.

Teddy Robinson, for sure. Ideal for that age IMHO :)

Ooh wonderful, lots of ideas. I don't know any of those except Mrs. Pepperpot so I will check them all out. I also looked at Pippi Longstocking but in about the first paragraph it says how her mother died when she was a baby Shock

We would never hear the end of that, the psychiatrist's fees would bankrupt us.

Ooh and from memory, I thought Olga da Polga? Haven't got them here to check for suitability though.

'The house that sailed away' is great by Pat Hutchins she has another book called follow that bus - but I don't know what that one is like.I agree with Teddy Robinson and Mrs Pepperpot suggestion, how about Fantastic Mr fox?, or 'The owl that was afraid of the dark?
The little grey rabbit series or indeed anything by Alison Utterley

I think Fantastic Mr Fox is too scary for ds - the farmers are trying to kill him, aren't they? The others sound great, thanks all so much for suggestions, any more gratefully received :)

Irritating bump to see if anyone has any other ideas. I have bought Olga da Polga on eBay and will look for others.

Raggedy Ann has sprung to mind. Brer Rabbit? Nurse Matilda? (may be too exciting - is the series on which the Nanny McPhee film was based - I loved these as a child but haven't seen them for years) The Little Tim books by Edward Ardizzone? Horrid Henry? Dick King-Smith?

Milliways · 17/04/2006 21:50

Horrid Henry is great!

Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree Stories. The Enchanted Wood is the first one I think. Fabulous stories that I remembered from my childhood and my 5 yo son has thoroughly enjoyed them too.
