Anyone reading the Dark Tower?

I'm a Stephen King fan but I'd never fancied the Dark Tower for some reason. Anyway, I started the Gunslinger in April and I'm now halfway through the Wolves of the Calla. I can't put it down Grin

Yes, but have stalled now as the next one is "song of susannah" and it is mysteriously absent from all bookstores...but the one after that, "The Dark Tower" (the last one in the series) is available....odd and irritating!

They are great! I was converted to Stephen King by dh years ago, and the dark tower series (and the TAlisman and the Black House written with Peter Straub - which also cross reference into the dark tower series, like loads of his books) combine SK's clever, non-schlock horror with my other favourite genre [whispers cos some people are a bit judgemental about this] fantasy (not cheesy Conan the Barbarian twaddle, but proper stuff like David Eddings, Stephen Donaldson, Terry Goodkind...am I talking to myself now?)

I cant get on with Stephen King for some reason, I prefer Dean Koontz, just finished reading Velocity.

Goldfish · 15/04/2006 18:23

I have never read Dark Tower but might if you reckon its good. I love both Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I am about to read Cell, Stephen Kings new book.

tallulah · 16/04/2006 10:31

Song of Susannah was re-released on 10 April. Hasn't made it to our bookshops yet but it's available on play dot com.

Jessajam, what do you make of the language? When you stop and think about it, a lot of the words don't make sense, yet it's really easy to follow. (I found myself saying thankee-sai after a particularly long session Blush )

Goldfish I can thoroughly recommend it, especially if you've read all the others because he brings in references to lots of his earlier stuff, like the Stand, Salem's lot.

I like the Dark Tower series although it wasn't as immediate as some of his other ones. I've always liked the way SK manages to link all his books together, and the actual Dark Tower is like a pivot that all his worlds and stories revolve around, sort of like the answer to all the bad things he's ever written about (does that make any sense?)

Jessajam - I agree with you about the whispering thing. People tend to think that the SF/fantasy/horror genres aren't very literary. Well a big fat rsssssspppp to them Wink

Polgara2 · 16/04/2006 13:05

Well, who dares to says fantasy genre books aren't literary, especially the ones with me in Grin. Was looking at the SK ones but couldn't decide, have just ordered Feist again!

jmum6 · 16/04/2006 13:30

Love stephen king and Dean Koontz. I'm just about to start Cell too. Have read all the dark tower books apart from the last one (The Dark Tower). I enjoyed them at first but found them a bit tiresome as the series has gone on.
My favourite recent Stephen King was Fro a Buick 8.

Mind you. I'm also ploughing my way through a load of chick lit at the moment too. I'll read anything! :)

Jessajam · 18/04/2006 11:49

Polgara2- saw you on another post and wondered if it was an Eddings refence!

I always find myself thinking in the language used in books for a while after reading them anyway...I love the way the dark tower lingo is almost familiar but not quite...

mummyhill · 18/04/2006 12:22

Haven't been able to get into them when I picked them up before which was quite odd for me. Will give the dark tower set another try after reading this thread. As a general rule I will read anything by SK, D Eddings and Stephen Donaldson though.

janeite · 19/04/2006 10:21

Just re-read all seven and loved them even more this time round. Felt myself completely caught up in Roland's world, wanting to say "Do it please ya?" etc! Won't give anything away but would love to know what anybody else who has read them all thought of the ending? And did anybody else cry at any point in reading?

Have read "Cell" - was a bit disappointed with it to be honest and normally love King completely.

mummyhill · 19/04/2006 10:34

Ok so what order do I read them in? I didn't realise there were so many of them maybe I should check that I have them all before I go much further.

Jessajam · 19/04/2006 11:17

Gunslinger, then Drawing of the 3, then the Wastelands, then Wizard and Glass, then Wolves of Calla, then Song of Susannah, then Dark Tower.

mummyhill · 19/04/2006 11:36

Thankyou will check bbokcase now.

mummyhill · 19/04/2006 12:28
