Great book. Is quietly hilarious, but more than just a comic romp. The eccentric dad is obsessed w/ tractors -- is symbolic, but nothing too ponderous. I venture to predict cod would like it.

Senoracod · 27/03/2006 10:16

i did
i read it
liked it a lot

i think tractors hughyl symbolic

their effect on peasant farming and the move to collectivisationa dn the effect of eh mad new wife on their famuily etc

My contribution is...

"My Mum liked it."

Shall I borrow her copy then?

ellceeell · 27/03/2006 13:33

I liked it! You've reminded me, I must get my copy back from my sister.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooory

Will return to the thread once I have read it (or send DH in the right direction) Smile

I enjoyed it but didnt think it lived up to the hype and positive reviews. Read it for my book group and we mostly felt the same. The funny bits were good, and the history was good, but didnt like the cruelty combined with humour, and didnt feel the characters really came to life.
Would say read it on a long train journey or on holiday but dont expect too much from it

Gingerbear · 22/07/2006 22:59

tis an old thread I know and apologise.
I read this book on holiday and loved it. Not funny, more bitter-sweet.
