Love Jane Harris, hate historical fiction - recommendations?

I loved The Observations, and now am part way through Gillespie and I and I'm enjoying it even more than I did The Observations. I don't usually like historical fiction that usually falls into the same category (e.g. not very keen on Sarah Waters, and didn't like The Crimson Petal and The White), so does anyone have any recommendations for what I might like to read next?

Mmm tricky one...........Salley Vickers is similar but a bit more 'twee' I find. You might enjoy 'The Thirteenth Tale' by Diane Setterfield?
Have you read any Margaret Atwood - I think her style is quite clever and literary like Jane Harris.
Am sure some other cleverer people than me will come up with some suggestions.

Thanks freelance, I have read A Handmaid's Tale, maybe I should dip into more Atwood. Will have a look at the others on Amazon now

Was it the quirky narrative style you enjoyed rather than the historical element?
If so, try The Girl on the Landing by Paul Torday or The Restraint of Beasts (black humour) by Magnus Mills.

Just finished Gillespie and I last night! Think it is a really well thought out story, and it got me hooked.

It's not so much the quirky style I like, it's more that I think she very cleverly pulls you into the story and gets you hooked.

I would suggest Atwood too.
Jane Harris does write books that totally pull you in. Gillespie & I was totally compelling.
