Can you recommend me a good book?

I am in desperate need for a new book to read on the kindle, no happy endings, no soppy fluffy love stories or shitty porn. I want a herione but a dark, maybe tragic storyline. I want something hardcore that's going to stay with me and take my mind off things.

The Guilty One by Lisa Ballantine. I have just read it and it is a very very good book.

Chundle · 06/10/2012 17:32

The hunger games

A thousand splendid suns. It's certainly not a light & fluffy read, but it will stick with you forever.

Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood - dark, tragic, heroine, fabulous book....

An older one but I've just read and enjoyed The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Daughter of smoke and bone, fantastic book

GilbGeekette · 06/10/2012 17:49

Seconding The Handmaid's Tale. First real 'feminist' book I read, had a real impact upon me.

SoldierKatnissEverdeen · 06/10/2012 17:51

Second the hunger games trilogy. Not fluffy, really cared for the characters, and unputdownable. A great read.

Kalisi · 06/10/2012 17:57

Game of Thrones! You got heroines coming out your ears! And I'll second "Euphemia's" suggestion too!

Oh and you are being vvvvvvvvvU! Grin

LaVitaBellissima · 06/10/2012 17:59

The Night Circus? I haven't read it yet but it sounds brilliant!

legoballoon · 06/10/2012 18:01

The Little Stranger (Sarah Walters) - chilling story set in postwar Britain, beautifully written.

Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck) - fabulous epic account of migrant workers travelling Depressing era States. Absolutely my all time favourite.

MadStaringEyes · 06/10/2012 18:02

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong.

Or just any of her Women of the Otherworld series.

toastandmarmiterocks · 06/10/2012 18:05

The Labyrinth of Osiris by Paul Sussman. Main characters are two men but there are some strong women too. Brilliant read.

ninjanurse · 06/10/2012 18:06

Another vote for The Hunger Games. Totally engrossing.

CheerMum · 06/10/2012 18:09

Ken Follets century series is good, kind of family saga

Agnesinroom25 · 06/10/2012 18:11

I've just finished The Wicked Girls. Very very good.

Dawndonna · 06/10/2012 18:11

I loved 'The Night Circus'. In fact I've read it twice.
Anything by Angela Carter.
Possession. A.S. Byatt.

PotteringAlong · 06/10/2012 18:15

Metro 2033 is great and very unfluffy!
