...because the sequel's on the way and I'm gnawing my arm off at the shoulder as I just know, with my luck, I'll read it in two days like the first one then have to wait a year and a half for the final part.

Damn you, trilogies.

Ive read it. It started off ok and then just got more daft. I won't read the next one as I was so disappointed by the first.

snigger · 13/09/2012 12:28

I started it fully expecting to hate it,and wobbled a bit a third in, persevered for an hour then charged on to the end.

I seriously didn't expect to enjoy it like I did, it was, I agree, daft in many parts - perhaps it fed into my continuing low-level fear of the dark !

I liked it and will read the next one asap.

I liked reading it in one go and will probably read the first one again before the next instalment.

Thanks for the reminder Thanks

I read it and loved it at the beginning, but I, too, thought it got a bit daft towards the end. I won't be reading the sequel, but I should think that DH will be.

thunksheadontable · 13/09/2012 14:20

I am really looking forward to it, though I also found it a bit daft in places. I just like that kind of daft!

solidgoldbrass · 13/09/2012 19:57

Yes, but FFS, a sequel? He hadn't got to the point after about 800 pages so I doubt he ever will.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/09/2012 20:05

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, having thought it was going to be dreadful. I only read it because several people on here recommended it. I devoured it in just two days iirc.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/09/2012 20:06

Yes to the right kind of daft! :)

I didn't realise it wasn't a stand-alone and was really fed up when I got to the non-end. Also very Angry that I'd struggled through it. Has to be one of the worst books I've read in a long time :(

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 16/09/2012 12:45

I read it because I took it on holiday and had nothing else to read. It should have been really good, it sounded like exactly the sort of thing I like, but by the end I was persevering rather than enjoying it. I thought it was a stand alone, not sure if I'll be arsed to read a sequel, and will definitely wait for the paperback/cheaper Kindle version if I do.

I loved the first part of it, then it just chugged on and on. I didn't finish it (though I jumped to the end to find out what happened) and I very rarely don't finish a book.

I also thought it was a complete book and not part of a trilogy. That was a let down too.

My MIL has it now, and she can't finish it either.

FermezLaBouche · 16/09/2012 17:22

I didn't enjoy it but persevered to the end for some reason. And I know I'll read the second installment, again chuntering about how rubbish it is!

HumphreyCobbler · 16/09/2012 17:24

I loved this book. Really really loved it. Can't wait till the next one.

HarderToKidnap · 16/09/2012 19:15

I loved the first one. Second one (friend sent me a proof copy) was distinctly not as good, IMHO. Will look forward to reading any discussions about it.

FermezLaBouche · 16/09/2012 19:18

oooh - jealous of anyone who gets to read books before they're out! :)

HumphreyCobbler · 16/09/2012 19:23

I think I need to read the first one again before starting the second

Thegoddessblossom · 16/09/2012 19:31

I loved it. When is next one out?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/09/2012 19:54

Deffo read the first one again before reading the second. I won't say anymore but I intend to read both of them again when the new one comes out!

Oh and if you liked it and you're looking for something fun to read in the meantime, try World War Z which lovely MNers recommended and which I really enjoyed. I thought I'd hate both that and The Passage because I thought they'd be trashy and badly written - they are trashy and are by no means great literature, but they are such good fun!

snigger · 16/09/2012 20:26

I read World War Z because David Sedaris told me to at a book-signing while I was hanging off his leg babbling -and giving him something other than zombies to fret about--

slothprincess · 16/09/2012 20:29

I absolutely loved it and am unbelievably excited about the next one. Will look into World War Z in the meantime. Thanks!

Eggrules · 17/09/2012 10:56

I loved World War Z Remus and can't wait for the film.
