Wow. Why am I only reading these now? Any other fans out there? I'm on book two of the Mallorean. Love it!

Podium, when the bloody hell is the last book coming out? I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!

Love the Belgariad, wish I could buy the books but I'm on a serious ban as, in clearing out for imminent PidjChick, I sent 5 binbags full to charity Blush

DoItRight · 10/09/2012 15:00

Ah yes, Anne McCaffrey (originals) are awesome, was sad when she died recently. Loved David Eddings. Raymond E Feist was another favourite at the time along with Dragonlance. And Sara Douglass. And Anne Bishop now... Am a bit of a huge fantasy fan Blush

PodiumOfWinners · 10/09/2012 21:53

Pidj - I have no idea, agonising isn't it! Wiki says January next year, so the world had better not end in December - Blood and Bloody Ashes if it does!

You're not anticipating having any time to read in the foreseeable though are you Wink

SoupDragon · 10/09/2012 22:02

I have about 200 fantasy books in the loft. Including the Belgariad, Pern, Dragonlance, Mercedes Lackey...

epeesarepointythings · 10/09/2012 22:03

I liked the early Pern novels, didn't get on too well with some of her later stuff as it got a bit samey and romance-ey and not gritty enough. I don't really get on with Mercedes Lackey at all and though I read all of the Dragonlance books I just got so irritated with some of the characters (that bloody barmaid!) that I gave up.

DoItRight have you read Guy Gavriel Kay? I love his stuff, especially the Fionavar Tapestry and Tigana (but love all the others too, he is a brilliant writer). I read Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy but burned out on her after that, haven't read her since because I got into vampire porn.

OrangeEyesDoMoreThanSee · 10/09/2012 22:08

Read them them at school about eleven years old and have kept them as my comfort books. The other trilogies aren't great but the legend of althalus is funny. The belgareth polgara diaries are good.

I however sold my soul to the first few robin hobb with night eyes and unabridged magician (Raymond Feist)

Takver · 10/09/2012 22:12

Agree the Belgariad is great - will have to find copies for dd - though from then on found it all a bit same-y. Love Anne McCaffrey's Pern books for light reading, her others not so much.

I really like early Mercedes Lackey, didn't know anyone else still read them! My favourites are the Arrows series and Magic's Pawn trilogy.

HumphreyCobbler · 10/09/2012 22:15

I loved the Belgariad as a child. The characters were so real to me. I was in love with Silk.

Never rated any of his other books though, I thought he shot his bolt with the Belgariad tbh.

Poledra · 10/09/2012 22:17

I loved A Song for Arbonne (GG Kay) - he doesn't do saccharine sweet endings, does he?

And Robin Hobb has done some sterling work, though the Soldier's Son trilogy was a bit of a let-down. My big sis, who introduced me to Eddings, was looking for something to read so I gave her Soldier's Son first, then plan to go to the Liveship Traders then finish up with the pearl that is The Farseer Trilogy and The Tawny Man. Oh yes, dear sister, I have a reading list planned for you - watch out, there'll be a test later Grin

fossil97 · 10/09/2012 22:19

What a blast from the past Grin

As a teenager I was hooked on fantasy and devoured the Belgariad novels, although even then they seemed a bit formulaic to me I still loved them. Plus all the Anne McCaffreys and the Shannara books. I was thinking of changing my MN name to something Pern related just the other day actually.

I used to wish they'd make the Belgariad into a film. Even a crappy low budget one would be OK.

waltermittymissus · 10/09/2012 22:24

fossil I only said that today! Or a Sky1 series because there's so much detail! Grin

I love these, first read them as a child and I can remember desperately waiting for the next one to come out.

Also Wheel of Time. I am so impatient for that final book, although how the hell it can all be wrapped up I've no idea.

Bowednotbroken · 10/09/2012 22:31

Yes I loved them too - like most of you I found them a bit repetitive, used to watch how many times he said someone 'noted' something! Not read them in a while though... Just discovered the Druid books of Kevin Hearne - they're great so far!

fossil97 · 10/09/2012 22:34

walter it would be a bit like Zena Warrior Princess ideally, with a bit of the Jonas Wilkerson Robin Hood thrown in.

fossil97 · 10/09/2012 22:35

I think I'm going to have to ask my parents to raid the loft before they come up next weekend.

waltermittymissus · 10/09/2012 22:46

fossil exactly! That's how I imagine it! :)

Podium, I have 3 months :o

MrsHelsBels74 · 11/09/2012 07:51

This brings back memories. I read the Belgariad but never made it through the Mallorean. I want to read them again now. I loved Polgara.

Poledra · 11/09/2012 09:42

Pidj, don't let the doom-mongers put you off - I have hours to read when I had a teeny baby. Many fond memories of sitting on the sofa with a sleeping baby on my lap, reading a book. 'No, DH, she's still feeding, leave her be.' Grin

My MW told me of someone she'd visited whose DH had fixed up a music stand for her next to her chair so that she could have the book up on the stand to read while she breast-fed. Now there's a man who understood his wife's needs!

SoupDragon · 11/09/2012 09:50

I remember reading Harry Potter out loud to baby DS1. He was mesmerised by the sound of my voice and it kept him quiet :o

I reckon a Kindle is the way to go for reading whilst pretending to feed feeding a baby.

PurplePidjin · 11/09/2012 09:59

Music stand is under my bed, i shall dig it out while i can still bend that far :o

I surf from a tablet pc, i think i may be hitting the kobo app hard come December! The bump is currently a handy place to rest it...

elfycat · 11/09/2012 10:01

I'm on my third set of the Belgariad, having worn two sets out. I started reading them in the ancient past at school and they were my comfort books.

I must read them again soon, but I'm taking a literature degree with the OU and have a book list of boring crap more literary stuff to study over the next few months. I might have to read them to my DDs for bedtime (22mnth and 3.5 years) I'm sure they'll love them!

Waiting impatiently for the final Robert Jordan (well Brandon Sanderson now) novel. 20 years I've been waiting...

PurplePidjin · 11/09/2012 11:03

Elfy, now 5 yo dnephew adores Narnia since he saw the film on TV last Christmas. He was thrilled when I bought him the book and sat through about 14 chapters straight! Dp had to take over because i needed the loo and a drink, dn wouldn't let us stop :o

waltermittymissus · 11/09/2012 15:12

Almost done with Book 3 of the Mallorean. I still love it but definitely prefer the Belgariad.

It does feel very ever so slightly repetitive. And the dialogue is still throwing me. Still seems a bit modern!

PurplePidgin, thanks for the warning. I will start Pawn of Prophecy early one morning to ensure enough time to finish it by bedtime. Now thinking I should get the Narnia series again, I think I lent mine out and it didn't come back.
