Alas, Babylon

Hello all,

I've been strongly recommended to read a book called Alas, Babylon. I adore post apocalyptic fiction and was moaning recently to a friend that I haven't found a book where I really give a toss about the characters for ages. Apparently this book is the one for me!

It's obscenely priced on Amazon and I was wondering if anyone here has a copy they'd be willing to sell me? I will pay a fair price plus p and p, obviously. If anyone can help I will be eternally grateful.

Many thanks!

Do you have a kindle? May be cheaper on that, I read it a little while ago, I would also recommend The death of grass too, which I read around the same time, probably preferred that one.

Actually come to think of it, I may not have acquired it in a wholly legal way Blush.

Did you STEAL from a library, MrsJM?? :)
I'm ashamed to admit I have done my fair share of this, particularly having moved between counties so often in recent years...

Yes I saw the Grass book pop up in people's lists, I will give that a go too. Sadly no kindle. Am annoyed with Amazon as I put 5 or 6 books in my basket with a total of £4 - when I get tot he final screen it tells me my total is £21 :( Cancelled the order in a huff!

You steal library books? Shock

FermezLaBouche · 01/09/2012 23:12

I have 2 books belonging to libraries. I am not proud of this!!!! :( Particularly as one is a crappy John Grisham and the other is a Harry Potter I have about 4 copies of... Definitely not done intentionally!

This might be in my give-to-charity pile, let me see if it is. scurries off to check books

MysteriousHamster · 01/09/2012 23:31

Hey OP, I have this and am willing to give this to you for the post cost, or in fact I might be able to do it for free... can you PM me your address please?

Slightly wrinkled spine (not my fault, way it's bound I think), but in otherwise excellent nick :)

I gave it three stars on GoodReads but I don't actually remember reading it...

I love post-apoc fic though :)

FermezLaBouche · 01/09/2012 23:34

Oh! Wow! About to PM you now :)

Oh and I'm absolutely not going to complain about the condition! :)

No stealing from libraries, although I probably owe them a fine Blush, maybe a bit of post apocalyptic torrenting.

I also started reading swan song which was good, my stupid tablet is now cracked though, so not a joy to read on. Post apocalyptic is probably my favourite genre though, love it.

When you finish Alas Babylon, try Earth Abides fermez - much the better of the two imho Wink and they go well together if you're into dytopian and/or post apocalyptic stuff Grin

FermezLaBouche · 04/09/2012 19:29

Thanks PomBear - I actually haven't heard of that one but will happily put it on my list!
*MrsJohnMurphy - it's my faourite genre too, but it's really striking me how many of these books were written in the 50's. I know the obvious reasons why, but I would love to read a modern Post Apoc book. I thought the Passsage was a pile of crap...

Have you read On The Beach Fermez ?
Only read it if you feel in the need for a good weep, you will positively howl it is the saddest, most heartrending book ever written I think, but it is so good too. I have to be in the mood for it, and start snivelling about half way in and by the end am a blubbering wreck - in a "good" way iykwim Grin
And there's Into the Forest, and A Gift Upon the Shore... I could go on for days, dystopian and post-apocalytpic fiction is my favourite genre and has been ever since I can remember circa 1975ish
