I'm a new convert (mainly as I've exhausted Tami hoag at our library and Linda le plante gives me night mares!)
I'm currently reading Hazel holt- but her main character is a lot older. Any other recommendations? I like the character depths and the flow

Haven't read the above authors but M C Beaton does the Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisin series that are character based and humorous rather than gory. A bit like Midsomer Murders for silly scenarios IYSWIM.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 21/08/2012 18:44

junping in here becasue also seeking cozy murders Grin can't take gritty/drug/glasgow stuff, looking for midsomer/stmarymead type sutff...

DuchessofMalfi · 21/08/2012 18:54

Agatha Christie?

hoodoo12345 · 21/08/2012 19:10

Karin Slaughter.

hanahsaunt · 21/08/2012 19:15

Karin Slaughter is far from cosy!

Agatha Raisin is v much light relief. Or the Lilian Jackson Braun who did The Cat Who ... series.

Really can't beat Agatha Christie though.

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 21/08/2012 19:17

need a 'jill Paton Walsh' who can do for Agatha Christie fans what JPW did for PeterWimsey/Harriet Vane fans...

highlandcoo · 21/08/2012 20:12

Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series would suit you really well.

Set around the village of Three Pines near Quebec, so lots of interesting background detail about the French speaking/English speaking divide in the area, also the main policeman's relationships, and mouth-watering descriptions of the food and drink in the local bistro.

Highly recommended :)

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 21/08/2012 20:39

highland - have just ordered one - cost me all of 1p on Amazon, so betta be good...Grin

buggyRunner · 21/08/2012 21:10

I don't like period things- think I'm sensing a gap in the Market Wink

SandStorm · 21/08/2012 21:13

I was going to suggest Hamish Macbeth as well although I've only read one. It was a very gentle story despite the murders.

cocolepew · 21/08/2012 21:14

Janet Evanovitch. Stephanie Plum series

and Sue Graftons alphabet series.

TheLightPassenger · 21/08/2012 21:44

not quite cozy, but I would recommend Ann Cleeves, either Shetland Quarter or Vera series. Or for more modern cozy stylee, Joyce Cato. If you can cope with period, Elizabeth Peters (Amelia Peabody or Vicky Bliss) series or Michael Pearce (Mamur Zapt series.)

cocolepew · 21/08/2012 21:46

Harlan Coben isnt graphic nor is Peter Robinsons Inspector Banks.

DuchessofMalfi · 21/08/2012 22:03

Agree Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels are enjoyable. Very funny. Love the interaction with Grandma Mazur. Earlier novels are better though.

KurriKurri · 21/08/2012 23:04

Ann Granger's Mitchell an Markby series are cozish whodunnits set in the Cotswolds - not period (some of her other stuff is but not these)

Ruth Rendell's inspector Wexford novels maybe

KurriKurri · 21/08/2012 23:05

sorry I seem to have made up a word - I meant cozy not cozish

TabbyM · 22/08/2012 16:13

Joyce Holms Fizz & Buchanan series are good, as is Spencer Quinn (dog narrator!)

frikonastick · 22/08/2012 16:20

charlaine harris does a couple of these series that are good, like the Aurora Teagarden and Lily Bard ones. No vampires in sight

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/08/2012 00:34

Ivy Malone - I forget who they're by, but they are so "cozy crime" to a T Grin There are four to date, I got them on the Kindle recently. I think they first one was either free or 77p, and the others were less than 2 quid each.

EightiesChick · 23/08/2012 00:41

Yes the Charlaine Harris Aurora Teagarden series is good. Real Murders is the first one.

Plus you can't beat the Agatha Christie Miss Marple novels - although your OP seems to suggest you are looking for younger detective protagonists.

EightiesChick · 23/08/2012 00:43

PomBear Thanks - the first Ivy Malone is indeed free. Just downloaded it!

CornishKK · 23/08/2012 15:14

Dorothy L Sayers and the Lord Peter/Harriet Vane series, brilliant!

ElephantsOlympianParty · 23/08/2012 16:19

Simon Brett - have loved all his series. All light-hearted murders. Enjoy!

Cherrypi · 23/08/2012 19:01

Elly Griffiths is good. M. C. Beaton is too but very cosy.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 23/08/2012 20:25

I actually read Ivy by mistake - the blurb says something about "as she got older Ivy became invisible" and I love sci-fi and fantasy, and thought it meant she actually became invisible Blush rather than what it really means, about people "just don't see" old people... I did enjoy it though, and went on to read all the others, so it was a good mistake in the end Grin
