How much do you pay for second hand paperbacks?

Was a bit shocked yesterday, as I picked up some books in a charity shop and the price was £1.50 each, £1.99 each. For chick-lit shite, and nothing very recent.

In my local shops you would pay 50p for the same thing.

I know it's all for charity and I did pay it, but wondered whether my local price was very low.

£5.99 for a second hand paperback in an Oxfam shop? That's ridiculous.

I wouldn't pay that much for a second hand paperback, given that most new paperbacks have a RRP between £6.99 and £8.99.

Unless of course the second hand paperback was an out of print book I'd been looking for. Then I'd probably pay that. But only in that scenario.

It is ridiculous!!! wasn't out of print either, at least it looked like an ordinary modern mass market paperback, it was just thick and heavy.

Love buying books from charity shops, have a local Oxfam shop that is dedicated to books. It used to be a really good place to go, books tended to be 75p-£1.25, less for children's. It is now around £2.99-£3.99, don't shop there any more, it has saved me about £20 every month or two.

I'll pay a pound (occasionally up to £1.50) for a paperback, unless it's something I particularly want.

I find BHF expensive at £2+ and don't usually buy books there. However the other day I was in a different town and their BHF was selling paperbacks for a pound. They said it was a 'special offer'. I bought three, and commented that I would have bought none at the normal prices, so they got £3 as opposed to nothing.

I just don't understand the overpricing - surely the books are donated, and in constant supply. I have seen in the past notices in charity shops saying they don't want any more books!

Unless it's a v expensive book or out of print book, I wouldn't pay more than £2, am more likely to buy at £1. Oxfam q pricey round here too.

I pay 20p at the school fair twice per year I go prepared with a strong bag as there is always lots to choose from. I send them back for the next fair so that they at least make 40p per book as I think they undercharge.

Between £1.50 and £2.50 here.
I think that's reasonable, considering a paperback is about £7-10.

I go to the library a lot, but do have a monthly Amazon splurge for new books.

Often buy new from The Works at 3 for £5 - cheaper than our local charity shops unfortunately - mind you I think keep the local Scope shop well stocked with books lol
