Well written books

Can any1 suggest well written books with good and complex sentence structure and not be completely dull.

I tend to like more juvenile and lighthearted books but that is unfortunately reflected in my writing.

TIA

PG Wodehouse would fit the bill. A virtuoso of sentence construction.

Like this;

“Into the face of the young man who sat on the terrace of the Hotel Magnifique at Cannes there had crept a look of furtive shame, the shifty hangdog look which announces that an Englishman is about to speak French.”

John le Carré writes well. The opening chapter of The Tailor of Panama is an absolute delight.

Or Graham Greene.

Rockinastocking - that excerpt reminds me why I should really get round to reading Wodehouse soon.

Rupert Thomson - i read his first novel about 25 years ago and have read everything he has written since. He has published 7 or 8 novels I think, and they are all completely different - apart from the fact that they are beautifully written.

Dreams of Leaving and The Insult are my favourites.
