Not sure what to choose for our next book group. Would obviously like to pick something I shall enjoy myself! I tend to prefer stuff set second half of twentieth century or later and am not generally keen on "fantasy" type books. Am currently really enjoying "Frankie and Stankie" by Barbara Trapido. Other books that I have really enjoyed were "Notes on a Scandal", "The Help" and "We need to talk about Kevin". So trying to analyse from those what kind of books I like, I suppose I would say books with a dry sense of humour and characters who are not cliches and which have something to say about the wider society in which they are set. All suggestions welcome!

The Horizontal Instrument by Christopher Wilkins. A rumination on time, god, and clock making.

Gillespie and I - it's the only book ever that our book club has continued to talk about 3 meetings on!

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. After lots of googling and a browse in Waterstones, have now chosen Black Swan Green. Have the Lionel Shriver book to read myself, but as we've already done a couple of Lionel Shrivers, thought I'd better not choose it for book group as we try to vary the author.

Ah, too late. I've just chosen "The woman who dived into the heart of the world" by Sabina Berman for our bookclub.

The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer. Brilliant.
