To someone who like PG Wodehouse, EF Benson and Mitford?

I have a 4 month old, am very tired and want to take refuge in this type of comforting read.

Cold Comfort Farm and Nightingale Wood both by Stella Gibbons spring to mind. I have just finished reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry which was lovely.

NoraHelmer · 04/08/2012 19:01

Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Josephine Tey.

fivegomadindorset · 04/08/2012 20:23

Also M>C Beaton.

Passmethecrisps · 04/08/2012 20:25

I've been reading Jo Nesbo. Norwegian crime writer. I really enjoyed it and immediately bought the next one.

It's contemporary crime so I am not sure if it's your thing.

Allalonenow · 05/08/2012 18:05

When I am a bit stuck for what to read next I often look at literature-map.com, it often pulls out some interesting suggestions, so you might like Forster or Tom Sharpe.
I second Stella Gibbons!

KurriotsOfFire · 05/08/2012 19:51

Going on what you've said you enjoy, I would recommend anything by Barbara Pym, or Pamela Hansford Johnson.

Other possibilities - Jerome K Jerome, David Lodge, Bill Bryson.

And yes yes to Stella Gibbons.

KurriotsOfFire · 05/08/2012 19:56

Oh Evelyn Waugh might be another person You'd enjoy, Decline and Fall is a good one to start with. If you've never read Diary of a Nobody it is brilliantly funny.

You might also like some of Kingsley Amis's stuff - the older stuff like Lucky Jim, That Uncertain Feeling or Take a Girl Like You. They are funny, but you have to put out of your mind the fact that KA was a bit of an old bastard Grin

KurriotsOfFire · 05/08/2012 19:57

Sorry - Diary of a Nobody is by George and Weedon Grossmith - just realised my post makes it look as if it is by E.Waugh!

PoppyAmex · 05/08/2012 20:32

Thank you everyone, plenty to browse on Amazon!

Allalonenow, thanks for the link - very interesting website.

I've reread all my PG Wodehouse and all Benson's "Lucia" books, so desperate for something new.

My hormones are still all over the place and my brain is slightly foggy from sleep deprivation, so I'm ideally looking for British cosy novels where very little actually "happens" (the literary equivalent of the Archers?).

Definitely give Barbara Pym a go, like Kurriots suggests. Very gentle, very English.

PoppyAmex · 05/08/2012 22:02

Read all Stella Gibbons and most Evelyn Waugh already and did enjoy it, thanks.

Just got "Diary of a Nobody", "Lucky Jim" and "Excellent Women" by Barbara Pym.

IN that case M C beaton will suit your needs very well, think a modern day agatha Christie.

highlandcoo · 05/08/2012 22:18

You could also try I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson

BlueEyeshadow · 05/08/2012 22:27

Oh yes, Miss Pettigrew is wonderful. Also second Jerome K Jerome and Stella Gibbons.

My guilty pleasure reading is Georgette Heyer - plenty of threads on here about her.

Allalonenow · 06/08/2012 00:09

Hello Poppy,
Have a look at Persephone Books, their catalogue is sure to chime with you, though not cheap, the books are beautiful and a joy to own. May be you could ask for them as gifts?

If you enjoy Mitford, you might also like the Sitwell clan.

Does your "sigh" mean that you need a hug? If so, here it is "HUG", if not, keep that MN stiff upper lip.
Take care.

PoppyAmex · 06/08/2012 10:47

Allalonenow thanks for the hug, needed and appreciated.

You're a genius - I got "Miss Pettigrew" and Monica Dickens from Persephone ages ago and had totally forgotten how brilliant (and beautiful) they are! Might take their subscription option, if they still offer that.

KurriotsOfFire, I started "Diary of a Nobody" last night and am enjoying it so far, very witty and nothing to scare the horses there. Thanks.

Oh good, that's you all sorted out now Poppy!!
Take care
(Here's a secret extra "HUG" to keep you going)
