You could try Richelle Mead Vampire Academy which is young adult but I thought were a good read. Or maybe Secret McQueen books by Sierra Dean. Secret is half vampire half werewolf but again pretty good.

Thanks to all the recommendations on this forum I discovered JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood novels. Completely awesome. Hot hot vampires, great storylines and so well plotted. Very cheeky and love their backgrounds.

Try Sunshine by Robin McKinley which is great or The Night Watch by
Sergei Lukyanenko which is more magical and a bit more grown-up.

Samantha Moon series by JR Rain - I'm, not sure if they are actual books or just on Kindle though. Get the omnibus if you can, they are pretty short. And Jude Magdalen, there are two of those so far, they're usually free or pretty cheap on Kindle too.
The Dark Hunter novels by Sherrilyn Kenyon are supposed to be vampire novels, although they aren't traditional ones. They are a great read though, pretty racy too.
Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series is good up until Obsidian Butterfly, then it degenerates into farce, caricature and utter shite and is simply not worth reading. Just stop at the end of OB and enjoy. Pretend the rest doesn't exist, really! They are that bad :(
There's one called Anathema that I finished recently, that has a sequel I haven't read yet - again, I got it dirt cheap for Kindle. There are loads available, if you search one of them and then just follow the "recommended" links from the page you will find dozens and dozens on there. If you don't have an actual Kindle the app is free to download to the pc or phone or "iThingy" Grin

If you want something different try the Joe Pitt novels by Charlie Huston. Really really good, more New York Noir pulp kinda style. Already Dead is the first one. Different take on the Vampire myth, more real world rather than shapeshifters and magic.
Still can't forgive Stephanie Meyer for the whole glittering in sunlight thing.

Try Tanya Huff's Victory Nelson series - Blood Lines, Blood, Pact, etc. - there are five in all, and then there are two offshoot novels which are also pretty good.

ArtfulAardvark · 07/08/2012 23:52

I agree I loved the JR Ward Black Dagger brotherhood books - ive only read the first 5 but have enjoyed them so far, be warned they are quite steamy!

Also enjoyed the Scott G Mariani vampire federation books, the Claire Farrell Ava Delaney series and the Christopher Buecheler II AM Trilogy

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2012 13:11

There's a lot of rubbish out there and anything in a series tends to be even more rubbish imho, but I really enjoyed 'The Passage.' 'The Historian' isn't bad either, although you have to put up with a lot of architecture to get to the vampires! And read Dracula, of course!

GrandPoohBah · 08/08/2012 19:10

Kelley Armstrong's women of the Otherworld series is great - urban fantasy, not just vampires but werewolves and spellcasters too.

AtLeastThatsWhatYouSaid · 09/08/2012 10:21

Jeaniene Frost - Night Huntress Series.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 09/08/2012 16:07

Immortal Blood by Barbara Hambly is good - I read it years ago and it was a stand alone, but I think she's since written more books with the main character in them - he isn't a vampire though.

IAmNoAngel · 09/08/2012 16:16

Anne Rice? Starting with Interview With A Vampire, the first five in the series are the best.

Bosgrove · 10/08/2012 18:10

I would second Kelley Armstrong books, the series starts with Bitten - I have just bought the latest today. She has free short stories on her website if you want to see if you like the style before you buy.

Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu is an excellent classic of the genre
