I love reading my 3 year old The Smartest Giant In Town

and I am actually looking forward to bedtime when I can read dd1 another chapter of Matilda - it is soooooooo brill to read aloud.

I found Enid Blyton utterly deathly. Any more faves?

Love Jez Albrough
Love Ben Blaithwaite
Loved reading the Narnia and Potter books. Hate nid Blyton and refuse to read J aquiline Wilson to dd

Orlando · 07/03/2006 14:22

I loved reading a little old fashioned book called The Witch's Tears by Jenny nimmo to dd2. It's a really atmospheric story, set just before Christmas, and was perfect for that time of year. And her elder sister had never read it so couldn't spoil it...

Bozza · 07/03/2006 14:24

Haven't done any EB yet but am actually looking forward to it. And you with that MNname - shame on you. Grin

I used to enjoy reading Peace at Last and Whatever Next to DS because we both enjoyed them. But prefer the Snail and the Whale over Smartest Giant. DH is a Gruffalo fan. Oh and Pooh's Little Weather Book. Blush

acnebride · 07/03/2006 14:24

Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit by Beatrix potter - because most of the books for real littlies were so rubbish and that one is so good.

SleepySuzy · 07/03/2006 14:28

My 2 year old and I love \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1843626055/026-7341022-8098026\Big Red Bath} - it's great, and you can do the splashing sound effects!

Orlando · 07/03/2006 14:28

Peepo.

The war-time aspect of it always makes me sad. When older siblings were sidling up wanting to listen I'd get them to point out all the things in the pictures that made them know it was in the war.

now all dd's are too old for it Sad

ds is 3 Smile

Ds and I are racketing through The Pirates in the Deep Green Sea by Eric Linklater - big opportunity for range of character voices, singing bizarre sea shanties and generally enjoying a laugh and a glimpse back in time to Empire dayswhen children were sent half way round the world to school on liners aged 8 and 10! Fabulous book.
When he was younger we used to read The Gruffalo all the time, and the Grumpalump. Not to mention the bloody Duck in the Truck!
Dd loves Panda Big and Panda Small by Jane Cabrera. I personally regret that it is an indestructible DK Toddler Special that cannot be shredded, soaked into pulp or burnt.

sophiecountessofwessex · 07/03/2006 14:48

hobbit, lord of the rings

johnny and the bomb and only you can save mankind - by pratchett.

i read all kinds of pratchett aloud to my 13year old son.

even half way through a book he will say read to me - so its more about the relationship than it is about the reading. so i give him a synopsis read to him until he's fed up then he will go off and come back and ask me what happened to .... whoever then i will read to him somemore and on it goes

The Things You Can Think
Charlie Cook's Favourite Book
Room on the Broom
I Took the Moon for a Walk

Angeliz · 07/03/2006 15:29

My naughty little sister (whole series)
Oh the places you'll go

I'd actually love to read her Charlie and the chocolate factory as i think she'd really enjoy the book.

suzywong · 07/03/2006 15:36

Oh Angeliz I wish my sons would have My Naughty Little Sister, particularly the one where Bad Harry finds the party trifle, but I'm not sure they would enjoy it, I'll try it though

We like all of Dr Seuss

When they were very little I enjoyed Each Peach and In the Night Kitchen

I only have two character voices: Ray Winstone/Kathy Burke for villains and the presenter from Muffin The Mule for Heroes. (Well the class system as such doesn't exist over here and I need to reinforce the children's roots somehow)

amynnixmum · 07/03/2006 15:40

Room on the Broom
Rumble in the Jungle
Commotion in the Ocean
Dinosaurs Galore
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Matilda
The Twits
The witches
James and the Giant Peach

MillionDollarBaby · 07/03/2006 15:41

Any Julia Donaldson - so fab to read aloud and I enjoy them as well as DD.

Also have a great book of poems for Children can't think what it's called but has an Orange cover - brilliant.

I'll enjoy Dr Seuss books too but dd doesn't really appreciate them yet. Have Roald Dahls book of poems and dd loves them but I find them a bit long winded.

Also looking forward to the likes of Matilda, The Twits etc when dd is older.

tessasmum · 07/03/2006 15:41

Definately love Dr Suess here.

We had a slightly adapted reading from "Oh the places you'll go" at our wedding last year. Great stuff Smile
