I really don't want to read the 2nd book of Fifty Shades, but am finding We Need To Talk About Kevin a bit hard going.

Can anyone recommend anything easy, but current? I liked One Day.....

The Thread: Victoria Hislop

I read it on my holiday and it was a nice, easy read.

SynchronisedSquirrels · 26/07/2012 18:06

I just read Stranded by Emily Barr.
About some people who get stranded on an idyllic island in Indonesia. A good plot with twists I didn't see coming, but quite an easy read.

NoraHelmer · 26/07/2012 19:59

I've been reading The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty. If you liked The Paris Wife by Paula McLain you would probably like this too. It starts with Cora accompanying Louise Brooks aged 15 to New York in 1922 before her Hollywood career took off but the novel is mostly about Cora's life. Very enjoyable story. An easy read but well written.

LeB0F · 26/07/2012 20:15

I think you would enjoy 'Me Before You', if you like 'One Day'.

NoraHelmer · 26/07/2012 21:26

Yes, Me Before You was a good read, as was Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, and The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen.

KurriotsOfFire · 27/07/2012 16:38

I've just read 'The Thirteenth Tale' by Diane Setterfield, on my holiday - it's a real page turner.

NellVarnish · 27/07/2012 17:10

Last week I read Life, Death and Vanilla Slices by Jenny Eclair and loved it. Really unputdownable.

The Thirteenth Tale was also fab, as was Me Before You, and I've also just finished the Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood (recommended on another thread) which is not my usual genre, and found that unputdownable too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2012 17:35

The Help - not bad for a v easy read, although not as good as it could have been.

We Need To Talk About Kevin is rubbish, so don't feel bad if you don't finish it!

swanthingafteranother · 01/08/2012 20:37

The Hunger Games Trilogy...by Suzanne Collins. Ultimate holiday post apocalyptic easy read. DVD to follow shortly Grin I kept re-reading and re-reading it. It is of course for 11 year olds, but still....

BonnieBumble · 01/08/2012 20:40

I think "We need to talk about Kevin" is a marmite read because I loved it, one of my all time favourites.

Just finished "Before you go to sleep". That was a good easy read.

picnicbasketcase · 01/08/2012 20:43

You should try We Need to Talk About Alan instead Grin

Also easy to read stuff like Catherine Alliott, Victoria Connelly, Jill Mansell, Sophie Kinsella.

Galaxymum · 02/08/2012 20:08

I'd like to second The Thread - an easy read but also very satisfying and I felt I learnt a lot without it being forced on me. Very interesting themes and characters too.

Really enjoyed Lady of the Rivers by Phillippa Gregory.
Also anyone tried the Fallen series by Lauren Kate? They're a great easy read - teen fiction. Holiday type reading (well Rapture accompanied me!)

I've got The Secrets Between Us to keep me occupied next week whilst taking DD around parks, play areas, zoos etc!

Pickles77 · 02/08/2012 20:14

Me before you by jojo motes Smile

stressheaderic · 02/08/2012 20:19

Me before You is fab.

NellVarnish I agree about Life Death and Vanilla Slices - bloody brilliant.

accidentalchickenkeeper · 02/08/2012 20:39

I've just finished The Believers by Zoe Heller. That was good

DiscoDaisy · 02/08/2012 21:44

The House By The Sea by Santa Montefiore.
The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley

GnocchiNineDoors · 02/08/2012 21:45

Plain Truth - Jodi Picoult

LuckyOwl28 · 04/08/2012 21:39

Although I'd second The Thread, Victoria Hislop I'd definitely say her debut novel 'The Island' is even better for a hol. I actually take it with me on all my hols as she sets the scene so beautifully and it is somehow just so much better to read when you're somewhere similar to the book setting (Greece).
Love story intertwined with some sad parts of Greek history and family tragedy.

awaynboilyurheid · 09/08/2012 20:39

Shadow of the wind or Winter in Madrid are good holiday reads I took we need to talk about Kevin on holiday last year , odd book wouldnt recommend it as holiday reading either although I think I liked it! Gave up on One day and I rarely do that but characters annoyed me! The help was enjoyable too taking me before you this year so really hoping its better than One boring day

quirrelquarrel · 13/08/2012 17:43

Nancy Mitford
Patrick Leigh Fermor
Two Serious Girls- Jane Bowles
Loving and Giving- Molly Keane
Thieves like Us- Edward Anderson
Exchange- Paul Magrs.
The Reappearance of Sam Webber- Jonathon Scott Fuqua

CurlyKiwiControl · 15/08/2012 19:30

Can I echo swanthingafteranother ...

The hunger games trilogy

ultimate easy read, far, far, far superior to fifty shades.

It didn't appeal to me, but I kept hearing about it - it may be up there with one of my favourite books ever ... Totally absorbed me and I was gutted when I finished it.

Nothing has grabbed me as much since :)

DuchessofMalfi · 15/08/2012 19:46

I've just finished reading The Book of Summers by Emylia Hall. A little bit sad and wistful, but gorgeous, evocative. Highly recommended.
