Do you use your library?

I use mine all the time and I've just finished reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and have now ordered (online from my library) The Passage, by Justin Cronin and Me before you by Jojo Moyes.

I'm always there but am amazed how underused they are? Ours is only small and I'll be gutted if it closes.

Yes, our small one is closing in September, well not really but is being handed over to the community, so I can still order books, but I work almost next dorr to our county library and we can get into our local town on a Saturday morning.

I am just about to start reading The Unlikely Pigrimage.

Oh yes and up to 6 weeks ago I worked for the library service.

fivegomadindorset · 22/07/2012 21:27

I think our county has something like 340 registered reading groups which we had to sort out aswell.

HerBigChance · 22/07/2012 21:29

Yep. I use ones from three different London boroughs. I have a stack of books to read and am just about to start one about King Edward VIII.

Wolfiefan · 22/07/2012 21:29

Lots of libraries closing in GLOS. Use it or lose it! Our local library is brilliant.

CuriousMama · 22/07/2012 21:30

Oh you'll enjoy The UPOHF but it is a mixture of emotions. It's good you use yours five Smile I adore them but I was always taken there as a child, it was so special to me. Although I always wanted to read biographies when I was little. My mum used to get them out for me too Grin

I use ours all the time. It's quite a big one but I feel like I'm the only 35 year old that patronizes it. There's lots of seniors and teens studying but that's about it. 'Tis quite nice actually because when I request an item (recommended by MN, naturally) I'm usually the first one to get my hands on the brand new copy! I particularly like mysteries; am currently reading "Malice in the Cotswolds" by Rebecca Tope.

SrirachaGirl · 22/07/2012 21:32

There are lots of....

joanofarchitrave · 22/07/2012 21:34

Yes. A lot.

brighthair · 22/07/2012 21:34

All the time. I use 4-5 locally as I read about 20 books a week so I often find I need to go to a different one to get some new books. I couldn't afford to buy all the books I read

birdofthenorth · 22/07/2012 21:35

Yes I do every fortnight but for DC not me. I should get into it myself really, in the basis of use it or lose it.

Mintyy · 22/07/2012 21:35

Just cut my card up in disgust. Had two books overdue and was fined £20. I have been a member of the library for 16 years and have a good track record, but these two books got lost under the bed (it was no more than 2 months, btw).

CuriousMama · 22/07/2012 21:35

There must be lots of rich 35 year old's out there as books aren't cheap. Mind you a lot have kindles I supposed and download them? I have no desire for one of them. Sdd got one and I don't think she uses it much now?

All the time.

Samantha1967 · 22/07/2012 21:59

never - as the books always get lost, even mine, so I end up having to pay for them. It works out cheaper to just buy the books in the first place. I have recently been through all the books in my house and found 21 school library books. Supposedly they are only allowed a maximum of 2 a week & have to bring them back before they get any more - something is obviously not working!

CuriousMama · 22/07/2012 22:04

Oh dear Samantha probably or the best then Wink

I used to go every week, but we all have ebooks now instead.

DorothyGherkins · 22/07/2012 22:19

Oh I love all our local libraries! I have one in town, and two local villages that are all quite near, and I ve used them all recently. They all seem well used and appreciated too. I d miss them a lot if they were to disappear. We have recently had computers installed so you check your own books in and out - I miss the chat to the library assistants.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 22/07/2012 22:21

I used to, but the bastard fuckers at the council closed it down :(

occasionally use local library take kids
but I buy books I want haven't borrowed in years

MirandaWest · 22/07/2012 22:29

I use the library (do get fines sometimes but that is my fault for forgetting to renew them - it is v easy to do online). DC enjoy using it and signed up for the Story Lab Reading Challenge last week.

I find non fiction books are v good to get from the library - just got an Olympics one which I would never have bought and have enjoyed very much :)

Fedupnagging · 22/07/2012 22:29

Yes although it's only a small library so not masses of choice. What is great though, is being able to order a book You want and only being charged £1. Children can order books free of charge.

Would be really Sad if the library closed so make sure I use it.

nipitinthebud · 22/07/2012 22:31

Use our local libraries all the time for DC (mostly) and myself. It can be difficult to get a specific adult book (craft ones) as they're always out. You have to pay to reserve it, which I'm not a big fan of so never do. But for the DC its perfect. I would be gutted if my libraries closed.

marshmallowpies · 22/07/2012 22:32

Yes, DD and I go for rhyme time every week and I borrow books for myself.

My library is in a temporary venue after the proper building was vandalised and has been closed ever since, and the next closest is threatened with closure too. Damn Tories for their cuts, Damn Labour for getting us into this recession and damn vandals....

CuriousMama · 22/07/2012 22:32

It's only 35p to order them in our library. People were moaning as it went up from 30p Hmm
