Dd (nearly 5) loved the Enchanted Wood/Faraway Tree - what can her and dh read next?

Dh has been reading a chapter of the Enchanted Wood every night for what seems like ages. Now they are finally coming to an end and are considering what to read next. Any suggestions gratefully received!

the secret garden... i loved faraway tree too!
lion, witch and the wardrobe was another fav of mine

WigWamBam · 04/03/2006 19:34

My dd loved the three Faraway Tree books too. She's since had Olga da Polga and is now on Naughty Amelia Jane, both of which she's enjoyed.

littlerach · 04/03/2006 19:34

Wishing Chair?

There are a few Enid Blyton fairy stories, we have one called Tales of Toyland.

popsycalindisguise · 04/03/2006 19:37

I loved them at this age and then enjoyed famous five......

mummycan · 06/03/2006 18:22

Wishing Chair
Naughty Amelia Jane
Fairy books by Daisy Meadows (Jewel Fairies, colour fairies, weather fairies etc)
My secret unicorn

emkana · 06/03/2006 19:05

Thanks for the suggestions.

Got Charlie and the chocolate factory out of the library today, as Wishing Chair was out. But will probably get that next.

Is the Lion etc. suitable for a not even five year old?

My Naughty Little Sister?

DD liked Enid Blytons Caravan family stories.

WigWamBam · 06/03/2006 19:08

I won't be reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe to my nearly 5 year old - she wouldn't understand it well enough to get much enjoyment from it, and I think it would scare her. Plenty of time for that sort of stuff when she's a bit older. Depends very much on the child though, I would have thought.

If you've not already spent your World Books Day voucher, get the Rainbow Fairies one. We're on chapter 3!

ernest · 07/03/2006 13:39

we got a box set of roald dahl books from the book people or someone - 10 books for £10 - the twits, witches, matilda, danny, the campion of the world etc etc and my 2 love them & we've read them all a couple of times. also loved the wishing chair I agree LW&W a bit too old for her

Enid · 07/03/2006 13:43

The wishing chair (dd1 loved it), naughty amelia jane

but if your poor dh wants a break from bloody Enid Blyton, then the simple roald dahl are good, dd1 also liked the sets of short stories for 5 year olds at that age, also My Secret Unicorn (she was nearly 6 then though).

Usborne picture classics are good, we did Black Beauty at that age, also fairy stories.

Oh and how could I have forgotten...Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf!

Dior · 07/03/2006 13:52

Ernest - we got that set too! Ds loved all of them except The Witches, because dh scared him with doing witchy voices when reading it!

goreousgirl · 07/03/2006 14:02

I keep getting new books for my just-6-year-old, that I remember as brilliant...ie; the borrowers and The WInd In The Willows - but the language is so unfamiliar and dated - such a shame - it's a bit high-brow for her.

For your nearly 5 yr old - I recommend Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (10/10), The Great Glass Elevator (7/10), Wishing Chair (10/10), My Naughty Little Sister (8/10).

I'm watching this post with interest..!

Bozza · 07/03/2006 14:04

DS has just turned 5 - we have read various Flat Stanley books with him (although maybe they are a bit more boyish), then Charlie and the CF (he's seen the film so that helped his understanding and he was Willy Wonka on World Book Day and quite into it). We are now on James and the Giant Peach.

goreousgirl · 07/03/2006 14:09

Ooh Ooh - and Felicity Wishes and Horrid Henry books too!

Enid · 07/03/2006 14:11

I forgot - dd1 LOVED gobbolino the witch's cat, even though it is terribly dated language in parts. She just loved it (and The Little Wooden Horse too) Smile

Feistybird · 07/03/2006 14:12

Oh god yes, am so excited about this thread. Reading the last Faraway tree to mine at the mo and have read the Wishing chair books. DD1 is a bit upset this is the last one, she adored them all - has chatted about the chapters, drawn pictures about them, the lot.

KBear · 07/03/2006 14:17

We're reading the Enchanted Wood at the moment too - DD and DS (7 and 4) listen while I read it every night but we're only on chapter 10 or so and I've renewed the book once already! There are three books in the volume. I reckon I will finish reading it by Christmas at this rate!

(I yawn my head off as soon as I start reading stories - what is that all about?)

Enid · 07/03/2006 14:18

because Enid Blyton is despereately dull to read aloud kbear Wink

Feistybird · 07/03/2006 14:19

Me too Kbear!

KBear · 07/03/2006 14:26

No, ANY books to read aloud, I just yawn like a mad woman and the kids look at me like "get on with it then mum".

(I love Enid Blyton BTW!!! which is the reason I'm reading it to DD).

Feistybird · 07/03/2006 14:28

Yes, Enid, how can you say Enid's books are dull, didn't you name your monicker after her?

She's wonderful.

ernest · 07/03/2006 14:39

I hate horrid henry!!! All that naughty stuff, pluss with all of the dialogue it just jumps about too much and is difficult to follow who the hell is speaking. big thumbs down from me.

lol dior. I like the witches tho - there's some really hilarious bits in ti. Since the 2nd reading, my 2 have taken to calling people "idiotic managers"

what is it about daddy's and story time? Mine winds our 2 up every night by reading in a stupid voice/reading too loud/ reading to quiet/reading the wrong story but pretending to be reading from the correct book. He thinks it's hilarious. sigh. When will he grow up I wonder????

Enid · 07/03/2006 16:40
Shock

I am \link{http://www.actionfigurecollectors.com/images/news/diamond/GhostWorld_Enid_Doll.jpg\THIS Enid}

Dior · 07/03/2006 18:41
