My Kindle is looking bare and it makes me sad.

I loved 'The Secret History' by Donna Tartt, and Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels. Also 'Enigma' 'The Ghost' and 'The Fear Index' by Robert Harris. Also Denise Mina's books, Val McDermid's, Rankin a bit. DIdn't like Dan Brown's.

What else would I like?

If you like Sophie Hannah and Lisa Gardiner then try abi Taylor as well all very similar

I have to recommend Nikki French.

Properly, properly scary (I could only read "Killing Me Softly" when DH was in the house...).

Envy re the kindle, I think it will be on my birthday present list.

Last suggestion - Jeffrey Deaver. Very twisty-turny and exciting until you figure out his formula, which takes a few books.

TwllBach · 19/07/2012 20:28

They can be quite graphic, but I think Karin Slaughter writes beautifully. I also think Cody McFadyen has a stunning way with words, I can read the same sentence 20 times just because it's so beautiful. Also wry graphic and upsetting though. There was one bit about a dog that upset me so much that I burst in to tears and threw the book off the bed.

I keep going back to reread the books though!

oh and Tana French is brillinat (IMO). I have given away In the Woods but am going to buy it back and keep all her books, which is somehting I never do with thrillers. For me, they're the sort of books you completely lose yourself in.

MabelStark · 20/07/2012 18:28

Yes yes to Tana French, amazing writer, she's got a new one out, Broken Harbour, can't wait to read it.

StealthPolarBear · 20/07/2012 18:32

Yes I have it, kids go away in a week so am waiting to see if I can wait until then :o

William Boyd - Restless, and Ordinary Thunderstorms.

Has anybody said Ruth Rendell, or perhaps try Barbara Vine? The only one of the latter I have read was The Dark Adapted Eye, which took a hell of a time to get into, but you might like them.

cocolepew · 20/07/2012 19:38

John Hart is a great writer.

kittyfishersknickers · 21/07/2012 22:00

Ooh I got hugely addicted to In The Woods and read it in one sitting, going from door to door on my outward holiday journey
I also really liked Judgement in Stone by Ruth Rendell, such a creepy main character...

I'm not great with anything too graphic or gory - I have been known to faint while reading a book...

I'm going to have to buy the other 3 raja French books this week. Will read broken harbour first, then faithful place then likeness then in the woods. I want to get that engrossed again. It's such a good feeling.

Also, whoever recommended Blacklands by Belinda Bauer - thank you! Finished it yesterday, was totally gripped. Read it in less than 24 hours. Was supposed to be saving it but never mind. I might read ITW again actually...

Pah! I'll shut up now Grin

RubyGates · 22/07/2012 21:39

Try the Flavia de Luce books by Alan Bradley. Graet if you like a bit of Gothic silliness along with your period mystery.

Drywhiteplease · 26/07/2012 08:21
