I love him and have just finished Honeymoon which I was a little disappointed with though it was OK.

Anyone else?

I read some years ago, but only from desperation forsomething to read. He wasn't my bag I'm afraid.

Pixiefish · 04/03/2006 15:54

I read a few of his a couple of years ago but have gone off the blood and death type books since having dd. I found him to be a bit slow at starting but ok once you got into him. HAve you tried Rankin? Much better IMO and based in Scotland

collision · 04/03/2006 16:09

I have also gone off blood and guts etc since having ds2 but this one was much more thriller and not so much gore.

Havent tried Rankin yet.

I've read a couple that a friend passed on and found them alright. I love Ian Rankin though he's a fab read and he comes from same place as meGrin

Hi, I must admit I love James Patterson and have read all the Alex Cross and Womens Club series. Another good writer is Jeffrey Deaver, he wrote the Bone Collector (as in the film)

PandaG · 04/03/2006 18:58

I too like the Alex Cross and 1st to die series. Not too keen on the one off ones though. I also like Jeffrey Deaver, particularly the Lincoln Rhyme ones.

SleepySuzy · 04/03/2006 18:59

Alex cross is great.

agalch · 04/03/2006 19:18

Love James Patterson, just finished Mary Mary.also like Deaver and Kellerman. The bloodier the better imo lol

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 04/03/2006 19:19

Ive read all his books - I love them. Have just finshed The 5th Horseman (the Lindsay Boxer series) I really liked the Alex Cross series, particually his earlier stuff. I think his later work has been rushed and I dont enjoy it as much. I could go on about James Patterson books for ages.... Blush

The one with The Wolf was sooooooo disappointing and was a 2 book thriller and the end was so bad.

Also with 'Honeymoon' it just seemed unfinished and I am sure I could have done a better ending.

It is as though he has lost the passion for writing or gets bored at the end.

Still love him though and will read all of them.

Have you read 'suzanne's diary to Nicolas?'

Yes I have read all his books. I have about a dozen favourite authors and hate waiting for a next book. How long does it take these guys to push out a novel, don't they know I'm waiting.

BudaBabe · 05/03/2006 00:30

Liked his earlier ones - Alex Cross etc but really feel he is rushing the latest ones. the chapters are so short that you skim through.

hannahsaunt · 05/03/2006 09:09

Early ones were excellent (imho!) but later ones are so dull and formulaic - know what you mean about rushed. He uses fewer words and it's just not as thoughtful.

Ian Rankin is a different class altogether - he is fab and just gets better and better. (He's from where I'm from too, MrsPitt!).

Kellermans are both good though Jonathan is suffering a bit from the same affliction as Patterson with his later ones. Faye is fab - love the Jewish insight and hers seem to come out more slowly so better written. Has anyone read Jesse's book (their son?)?

zaphod · 05/03/2006 09:25

I like James Patterson, Deaver, and Faye Kellerman too. If you like these, you'll probably like the Karin Slaughter books too. Another excellent writer is Carol Connolly, but i have only had one of hers.

I used to love horror fiction, but can't read it since having kids.

blueshoes · 05/03/2006 10:22

I agree with that JP's earlier books are miles better than the later ones. Recent ones seem to have been written by another person with JP's name on it nominally, much like a franchise. I have given up on his books.

agalch · 06/03/2006 18:04

Didn't know the Kellermans had a writer son. Will need to request that one.Whats it called Hannasaunt?TIA

Orinoco · 06/03/2006 22:14

I agree, the ones where he's written "with" someone else are not as good as the earlier ones. I'll have to look for Rankin.

Have you tried Harlen Coben, particularly the Myron Bolitar series? They're not as gory, and quite humorous with the thriller side that i love!

eidsvold · 18/04/2006 06:41

what about michael connelly - good write - i read kellermans, jp - although it can get a bit same old same old

one I have just discovered - Lisa Scottline - kinda a female john grisham...

hannahsaunt · 18/04/2006 09:21

Sorry - no idea re: Jesse P title but it's v glossy in the bookshops (riding on the coat-tails perchance??).

Huge fan of Ian Rankin and also Quintin Jardine (both series - the Oz Blackstone ones and the Skinner ones) which are also Edinburgh based. Ken McClure is good if we're going on the Scottish crime/thriller wave as is Val McDermid.

Eids - I love Lisa Scottoline too - found her through a collection of short stories. Working through her back catalogue from the book swap shop here (something which Townsville has in abundance and is great as the libraries are not that great).

Also Sara Paretsky, PD James and Ruth Rendell.
