Sorry, my link is rubbish.......funny review is on amazon......I'm a techno halfwit!

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 16:49

My fiancé bought it for me after we found out I was pregnant. I have had it almost two weeks and have yet to finish page 2. Badly written isn't the words for it. It's terrible, for example in the first paragraph on page 1 the author describes the girls college roommate as having eyes that are too big for her head. What kind of narrative style is that! And yes if you go on Facebook like I did and moan about how £7.99 was wasted on pure dung you will get people telling you to wise up just like I did .

Having said all that, I wasn't feeling very well one evening and my fiancé trying to cheer me up, opened the book at a random page and starting reading out loud. I was crying with laughter within seconds :-) we took turns to read random pages and it was so funny.

I have a revelation for those of you who think it's a piece of shite - the reason?
It started life as Twilight fanfiction.

I'm not even kidding. The first book began on the internet as "Masters of the Universe" - google "snowdemons icequeen" if you want to know more.
It makes a lot of sense if you think about it, I've not even read it but from what others have said there's a lot of parallels with the creepy manipulative male and submissive, oblivious but "sooo in luuuurve" dim female.

I despair that the bestselling paperback book of all time is bloody fanfiction with the names changed, let alone fanfiction for something as boring as Twilight.

Limelight · 23/07/2012 19:44

I read all three because I couldn't believe how terrible the writing was.

Which I suspect is not the best advertisement. Grin

FridigHare · 01/08/2012 21:44

I've just finished all 3 quite enjoyed them. Am easily pleased though! I agree with getting bored with the sex bits and that there is a lot of repetition of phrases.

rawlesy · 01/08/2012 22:31

It's not the worst book in the world but you have to read all 3 to get the real picture. Horses for courses its a bit like marmite, you will either love it or hate it!!!

FridigHare · 01/08/2012 22:37

When I say quite enjoyed them, I mean I actually was a bit obsessed and read them at the first opportunity. No way the worst books I had ever read.

Alwaysme123 · 01/08/2012 22:39

iv heard alot about it.. (well tht it contains sex) but to be honest i wont be reading it..

RossettiConfetti · 06/08/2012 15:22

I read all three in 3 days (was off work sick). On my Kindle so less than a tenner for the lot. I did quite enjoy it, to be honest. It passed a few days!

It really is very badly written, and as many said, the sex - while some scenes were a bit hot - soon gets not only boring but excruciatingly boring, even embarrassingly so, and I skimmed them in favour of the thin, one-dimensional and unconvincing plot. However, I wouldn't say don't read it, just don't read it in favour of a decent book, read it in the same way you would any other trashy novel, for that is what it is.

sieglinde · 06/08/2012 16:16

FWIW, the fanfiction name of the noble Ms James is actually Snowqueens Icedragon, and you can STILL GET the Fanfic for NOTHING by googling. It's mostly IDENTICAl to the published book. It's appallingly written.

ArtfulAardvark · 06/08/2012 23:55

I REALLY resisted it because a) I dont like to jump on a bandwagon and b) Pd off that I didnt get it when I first looked at it and they were practically giving it away, the price has gone up so much since I first looked at it on kindle.

I am also a fan of the lazycatfish review on Amazon...pure brilliance.

I eventually gave in so many people seem to love it and I have to say I enjoyed the series. Whatever the press like to say, its not going to change your life, lets face it unless you have spent your life in a bubble surely you KNOW most of this sex stuff anyway?

I read all 3 books in just over a week toward the end I was skimming the sex bits as it was the story I liked, the writing is not brilliant, it is repetitive (how many times does she "think" a fragrance is possibly jasmine)

Think of 50 shades of grey as Mills and Boon with whipping and butt plugs and you probably get the picture! Wink

It does all get a bit twee in the 3rd book but, if you can suspend all logic and are looking for something to fill some time & enjoy a fictional bad boy turned good by love, its worth a whirl if you can get it v.cheaply!

Certainly not the worst thing I have ever read (and ive read some dreadful books since having the kindle) The worst was called the Soul Scarab by CJ Turner, I didnt even manage to finish that one, I even left a critical review for it as they I felt they were getting friends and family to leave glowing reviews and conning people into buying it.

malakadoush · 07/08/2012 12:15

Easy trashy read. Sex bits get a bit boring after a while and some of the phrases are a bit cringeworthy but I actually quite liked the characters and the story...read all 3 in a couple of days. It won't change your life but it's no worse then a lot of chick lit.

I can't believe that FSOG is the best selling book in UK since records began - 5.3 million copies in pb and ebook.

ExpectingaBundle · 07/08/2012 22:56

Nope.

PissyDust · 07/08/2012 23:06

I bought it today!

ArtfulAardvark · 07/08/2012 23:19

Seriously the best selling book - now that is shocking.

DuchessofMalfi · 08/08/2012 20:32

link from The Guardian. Did anyone know it was to be turned into a film also?

sieglinde · 09/08/2012 08:32

Yes. sigh.

JoySmith · 15/09/2012 07:48

I recommend the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer if you haven't already read them, The Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and His Every Desire series by Emma Rose. All of so good in their own way.

CoteDAzur · 15/09/2012 08:38

Ulysses - Brilliant review. Thank you Grin

jelabi · 21/09/2012 15:31

I read the books because of all the hype and thought they were complete
rubbish, very badly written, and I would'nt recommend them to anyone.
