Planning to read Ian Rankin's books - where do I start?

That's it really. I'm on the fourth Harry Potter book just now, but after I've finished all of them would love to start reading Ian Rankin as I'm fairly new to crime fiction. Do not think I've ever read one before!

The only reason I've said Ian Rankin is because the author is of interest to me is after a relative suggesting I give the books a go. Looking for opinions on where's best to start, is there a set order to read the books in?

I'd suggest starting with the first Rebus book. I think they're excellent and am very addicted!

I would read the Rebus books in order. Only bother with the rest if you really really love the Rebus ones - the Rebus ones are great, the others less so, IMO.

I think the first of the Rebus books (you have to start with Rebus) is Knots and Crosses, but they're all stand-alone really - any back story is explained. Enjoy - they're really good books.

Knots and Crosses is the first.

Sorry Blush half of my post didn't even make sense! I meant that the author is of interest to me because of the geography (where many of the crimes are set) and a relative also said it's worth reading them.

Thanks everyone, will head to library after the Harry Potter books are all read. Am all excited! Grin
