He likes: Harlan Coben, Christopher Brookmyer, Iain Banks, Jo Nesbo, Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fforde.

Usually I go to Waterstones and have a browse round but I can't get there this time before his birthday so I will be resorting to Amazon. Any suggestions as to books I could buy him? Thanks Smile

Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy (Girl with the dragon tattoo etc), Henning Mankell's Wallander novels?

AnnaMosity · 15/07/2012 08:11

Look at those authors on amazon and at "people who bought this..."

NoraHelmer · 15/07/2012 08:18

try literature map website - it was recommended on MN a while back.

MayasPapaya · 15/07/2012 08:21

Neil Gaiman?

HandMadeTail · 15/07/2012 08:22

I wouldn't even try to buy fiction for DH (and he has at last stopped trying to do so for me).

What about non fiction books about a particular interest of his? I can usually get this right.

HandMadeTail · 15/07/2012 08:25

That literature map is great! Thanks Nora!

SoupDragon · 15/07/2012 08:32

That literature map is fabulous! Having typed in one name off the top of my head, it was mainly surrounded by authors I've already read :) Plus a few more.

IHeartKingThistle · 15/07/2012 08:40

DH likes Harlan Coben and also Jesse Kellerman and Lee Child.

GrapesAnatomy · 15/07/2012 08:59

Yes, my dh may have read the odd Lee Child. Ahem.

That literature map is fantastic! I've already sent it on to my Dad and MIL (both avid readers)
I put in Harlen Coben and loads of authors I recognised from books dh has read came up!

Thank you Nora Smile

If he likes Harlan Coben and Lee Child, try Dennis Lehane, Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, John Connolly and John Sandford.

highlandcoo · 15/07/2012 09:38

Seems like your husband likes crime fiction and also quirky humour. Try Carl Hiaasen who combines both. Skinny Dip is a good one to start with; I think there may also be a one-volume trilogy available.

Another great book is The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills. Dark humour and original writing.

CarefulUpThere · 15/07/2012 09:52

I like quirky humour and crime and would recommend Malcolm Pryce and the "Aberystwyth" series to another pratchett and fforde fan.

There is also a new jasper Fforde Thursday Next book out this month, "the woman who died a lot".

NicholasTeakozy · 15/07/2012 11:01

John Connolly. I've just re-read Every Dead Thing and it's even better than I remembered.

emdelafield · 15/07/2012 11:06

If he wants to branch out a bit anything by Paul Torday would be good or Michel Faber.
My DH has been enjoying vintage fiction by Nevil Shute esp On the Beach.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 15/07/2012 11:36

Malcolm Pryce's Aberystwyth series - if he likes Pratchett and Fforde he should like those too. They are brilliant and funny, and also work well as "mystery noir" in spite of being set in Aberystwyth Grin

ninjanurse · 16/07/2012 09:08

David Baldacci and Camilla Lackberg.

IAmSherlocked · 16/07/2012 09:12

John Sandford's 'Prey' series is really good.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 16/07/2012 18:22

There's a recent-ish Christopher Brookmyre out, has he got it already?

cocolepew · 16/07/2012 18:27

Nelson De Mike, Greg Hurtwirz, Richard Montanari, Jonathan Kellerman.
I'm reading the new John Sandford atm. There are loads of Prey books so it would be a good one to start.
