book group reading over the summer is to be a trilogy of our own choice, so I'm looking for ideas! Thanks!

LaQueen, we DO read the same books. The Alexander Trilogy is one of my all time favourites. The Persian Boy is the most beautiful love story I have ever read. In fact I re-read all her books frequently, they are so beautifully done.

Also echt - I was going to recommend Robertson Davies. All his trilogies are wonderful.

Mary Renault is wonderful. She and Robertson Davies are my favorite authors (he wins by whisker, though).

Like Tiggy, I'm almost jealous of people who are about to read anything by them for the first time. On the other hand, I'm very happy that I have had the opportunity to read them all so many times over. They all get reread every couple of years; The Persian Boy is falling apart, as is The Deptford Trilogy, which I have in one volume.

Another vote for Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy, as recommended byJux.

Hello
Regarding a set of good books I can thoroughly recommend a series by C J Sansom starting with Dissolution then the Dark Fire :Sovereign.etc I was given the first one as part of world book day last year and was absolutely gripped everything was put on hold I have not been like that since Twilight or the Lord of the Rings. They are beautifully written and the same author wrote Winter In Madrid which is a brilliant book. I am a pretty keen reader but I have to say I am about to start the 3rd in the the shades of grey but am losing enthusism the above series by CJ sANSOM is in a different category all together and you will be ordering all the others very quickly. Happy Reading !!

J Sansom is very, very good. Detective novels set in Tudor times, well written, well researched - Sansom really knows his stuff.

There are 4 books so far, and I am eagerly awaiting the next.

The Sugar Street Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz is an excellent read (and not too challenging either so great for a summer read Wink).

Oh dear I killed the thread.

Here Be Dragons
Falls The Shadow
The Reckoning

Sharon Penman I re-read every year.

Jux, I have also read the Mary Stewart books many times. The moment when Arthur finds out his true heritage never fails to send a shiver down my spine.

Also my user name - the best Robertson Davies character he created Smile I have also bought a few copies of the Deptford Trilogy, as I keep pressing it on people who probably don't want to read it but take it to be polite. Then never return it or mention it again Hmm

Mary Renault is such a beautiful, lyrical writer. I probably love the Praise Singer the most.

HC, I can't decide between The Mask of Apollo, The Persian Boy or The Bull from the Sea.

I'm a bit stymied for rereading some of my favourite books. A lot of them are still in boxes as we don't have enough shelves to unpack things, and the boxes are un-get-atable Sad . Usually, when I move the first thing I unpack are the books, but this is not what dh does and he doesn't seem to understand how much I yearn for them. Still, I am gradually getting it done.

The result is that I can't get at The Salterton Trillogy and the only Renault I've been able get out of a box is The Mask of Apollo! HC was an interesting character, if memory serves me - would you say you have muchin common with him? Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 19/07/2012 10:21

I have the hair Grin

I love The Last of the Wine, but have some trouble understanding the politics.

Oh, they are ALL so good. They move me beyond my capacity to express.

Jux · 19/07/2012 11:35

Ooh yes, The Last of the Wine! That'll be in a box.....

HumphreyCobbler · 19/07/2012 11:37

I read that for the first time on my honeymoon. On a balcony in Venice Smile

msrantsalot · 19/07/2012 11:38

Conn Iggulden has 2 trilogies, one about ceasar, one about ghengis. You'd maybe think they are a little violent but they are supberbly written and really really interesting.

Jux · 19/07/2012 20:29

I was lucky. My parents handed a Mary Renault to me when I was about 15. Gosh, that's nearly 40 years' worth of reading them!
