I'm testing out questions for a quiz - it's aimed at a broad audience including young teens and shouldn't be too difficult. I expect lots of you will get them all right straight away but I'm hoping for a success rate of between 5 and 8 out of 10 for most.

Ding ding! Round one: food in fiction
(this is a sensory round with small bowls of the following food on each table - name the book the food comes from)

  1. A little gem lettuce and two baby carrots
  2. Gruel
  3. Two oatcakes and a glass of water
  4. Blue soup with string
  5. Chocolate pie
  6. A madeleine
  7. Beans with no ketchup
  8. Mixed jelly beans
  9. Cakes iced with 'EAT ME'
10. Ginger beer

Next round coming soon.

Ah go on you can pm me if you like. I am rubbish at these I only have 2 I am sure of and 4 I might know

shrinkingnora · 11/07/2012 19:14

I can get 2,4,6,9,10 (although can't remember name of 6 but probably could under pressure)

TheOneWithTheHair · 11/07/2012 19:15

I only am sure of two and possibly two more.

PandaG · 11/07/2012 19:15

do you want us to type the answers? I think I've got a few

winnybella · 11/07/2012 19:15

I know the answers to 4, 6 and 8. And I've read lots of books Confused

Pascha · 11/07/2012 19:18

2, 4, 6 and 10. No idea about the rest.

PandaG · 11/07/2012 19:20

I would make a guess at 1 and 8 think I know 2,4,9,10

notnowImreading · 11/07/2012 19:26

Would it help if it was a mix and match activity? I want it to be fun rather than frustrating.

Right, here are the books they're from -please match them up:
Jane Eyre
In Search of Lost Time (Proust)
Bridget Jones' Diary
Oliver Twist
The Tale of Peter Rabbit
The Famous Five stories
The Help
Of Mice and Men
Harry Potter series
Alice in Wonderland

Please can you tell me' whether you think I should leave it blank and tricky or make it easier with the mix and match option? Thanks for trying it out for me.

ah, I was right with 1 and 8, and 2,4,9,10. I now know 5, but still don't know 3 6 and 7 (and I have an Eng.Lit degree!)

I might go for mix and match if you have young teens too.

33goingon64 · 11/07/2012 19:35

I got about 5 without the answers. With the answers I can match them all (I think.. If beans with no ketchup is of mice and men and oatcakes is Jane eyre). Make it a challenge, especially if they are in teams.

Lightshines · 11/07/2012 20:57

without the options, far too hard for me - loads of books could be 'gruel', especially if its a bowl of porridge - people would (quite understandably) come up with all sorts of answers!

WhyAlwaysBoris · 11/07/2012 21:03

I could only do 2,4,6,9,10 without looking at the corresponding books to choose from. With the answers i'm mostly there but I have no idea about 8!
Are you going to put us out of our misery and give us the official answers down thread please? :)

openerofjars · 11/07/2012 21:06

If you're aiming it at young teens I'd take out the Proust and The Help. What about including something from more recent children's fiction e.g. Jacqueline Wilson, Alex Rider, His Dark Materials, even Horrid Henry?

notnowImreading · 11/07/2012 21:28

It's for families - the idea is to get parents and kids talking about books across generations - so we've got to have things for all ages in all rounds. I've taken your advice and made little flags for teams to stick in the dishes.

The answers are:
1 Peter Rabbit
2 Oliver Twist
Ooh, can't remember the order, just going to check original post, back in a minute.

6 In Search of Lost Time

OP posts:
notnowImreading · 11/07/2012 21:30

7 Of Mice and Men
8 Harry Potter
9 Alice in Wonderland
10 Famous Five

Thanks everyone!

next round please :)

Ginger Beer could be just about any of Enid Blyton's books, not just famous five.
