I like all sorts of books and am shortly about to depart on holiday. Please would kind Mumsnetters share their recommendations for readable modern novels?

Hi - I've just returned home from 2 weeks in Rhodes and I managed to get through about 13 books! I took the Fifty Shades trilogy because everyone was talking about it. It is good, if somewhat predictable and a bit mills and boonsy - I think the hype is due to the sexual content. Worth a read though if you haven't read it already. Also, 'I've got your number' by Sophie Kinsella - it was absolutely brilliant! 'This Charming Man' is also fab by Marian Keyes. In fact anything by Marian Keyes or Sophie Kinsella, you can't go wrong. My all time favourite is 'The Host' by Stephenie Meyer which is a light touch sci-fi but mostly about relationships and love.

What sort of things do you like? I've got a massive thread on this at the moment but if you like chick-lit etc it won't be any good to you.

If you don't mind crying on your beach towel, 'Paula' by Isabel Allende is brilliant. And I throughly enjoyed reading 'Let The Right One In' (Scandinavian vampires; bleak Swedish housing estate; plenty of blood and guts etc) on the beach in Greece a couple of years ago!

I've just read:

The Art of Fielding (v. Good - character driven and differenet)
The Night circus (loved it loved it - so different - and the idea behind it was amazing)
The song of Achilles (good too but not my fav of the three. I'd buy but from a charity shop if you see it)

Other then that Anything by Paulina Simmons - The Bronze Horseman, Alexander and Tatiana and the Summer garden - Loved this trilogy and have read it again and again :)

The Hunger Games books - very good x
