Hare with Amber Eyes - is it worth plodding on with?

I've been ploughing through it, a few pages at a time before I fall asleep & am about a quarter of the way in, but feel as though I've been with Mr Eproussi in Paris for about the past five years. Does it get better, or should I just get on with my life?

It does get better, imho. The chapters about Vienna in the war are really interesting, but also very sad.

florenceuk · 09/07/2012 19:23

i really liked this book - sorry. Vienna was indeed very sad.

MerrilyWatkins · 09/07/2012 19:58

I gave up...

MirandaGoshawk · 10/07/2012 10:46

Perhaps I'll skip a bit & move on to Vienna.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, I think it is. I found it a very thought provoking and moving book.

fedupwithdeployment · 10/07/2012 13:51

It got better, but it was hard work. Not the best book I have read.

MirandaGoshawk · 10/07/2012 16:35

I think he writes beautifully, but it's a bit intense and such hard work.

Not for me. I was bored and have now outed myself as a philistine.

alana39 · 11/07/2012 20:46

If it's feeling like a chore then probably not. I started it yesterday and am loving it but I've read other books set in Paris at the same time recently so it's interesting as a real story compared to the fiction. Otherwise I probably would have thought it very hard work.

MirandaGoshawk · 12/07/2012 11:14

It does feel like a chore although I'm interested in the arty references (his ancestor appears in The Luncheon of the Boating Party IIRC) & it's fascinating, as you say, that these are real people & not fiction. But I'm stuck & was wondering if it suddenly gets better. I do want to find out what happens but find myself distracted by easier reads, which is why I wanted the feedback.

Will finish 'Narrow Dog to Carcassonne' - a total delight - and then get back to the Vienna bit of 'Hare'.

I usually have about 3 books on the go so I can read what feels right at the time!

MirandaGoshawk · 12/07/2012 15:16

Good point, but if a book is a pleasure then it's hard to put down in favour of one that's hard work.

I'm struggling too, just did a search to see what other people thought and came up with this. It just seems to consist of long descriptions of pieces of art. I'm listening to the audio version. Does the book have pictures?

maillotjaune · 20/07/2012 21:16

A few pictures but not loads. Just finished earlier and found it very moving and interesting but it was a bit of an effort.

If you're still on lots of descriptions perhaps you haven't got to Vienna 1930s? Stick with it for that.
