Have read one or two..and don't know which one to go for next. Some of them seem to be part of a series..can I read those as one offs or is it best to start with the first one?

I was going to suggest Alison Weir too Chessie , She's a bona fide historian and has written many non fiction books too. I really enjoyed her books The Captive Queen - about Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Innocent Traitor - about Lady Jane Grey.

Of PG's i love the Wideacre trilogy. You can usually get them for a pound a book in ASDA!

I've got the captive queen but not read it yet. I really enjoyed innocent traitor though. I have read The Little House and most of Gregory's tudor/cousins war books but haven't tries the wideacre trilogy yet.

LaQueen

Interesting take on The Little House. I felt that the DIL had won and was lording it over her DH and FIL and making them dance to her tune.

Don't watch the DVD though, it is very, very different to the book with a crap ending.

Have only just discovered PG - was given The Red Queen by a friend and loved it. Definitely want to read more by her.

I agree with LaQueen I feel some of her recent novels are very disappointing and there does not seem to be as much thought in the plotting or characterisation as the older ones.

I really enjoyed The Wise Woman not an historical novel as such but very enjoyable and The Queens Fool or The Other Boleyn were good too.

The Litte House was a clever book but I didn't feel very engaged by it.

As an aside, PG used to live here, she's from the town, and when her house went up for sale, I tried to persuade DH to come and view it with me. He, being a realistic soul, pointed out that we were about as far from people with that much money as you would ever see and refused :( It was a beautiful house, and on the market for the second highest asking price ever here (and would have got a teeny little flat in London or somewhere for the same amount) - I pored over the spread in the local papers property pages and still regret not at least trying to go for a nose Grin

ChessieFL · 24/07/2012 12:56

Ooh, I would definitely go for a nose round a famous person's house if it was up for sale - although I'm sure estate agents have quite rigorous procedures to sift out the gawkers like me

NellyBluth · 24/07/2012 21:36

The Other Boleyn Girl, definitely. The Red Queen was pretty good, the White Queen and the Lady of the Rivers were alright, though I really wish she would write one on Elizabeth of York rather than the Neville girls next. The only problem I have at the moment is I'm a Wars of the Roses buff and there are some glaring inaccuracies in the books - I kind of see why they are there, she can't get everything in, but it is difficult when you notice them!

I just read Changeling. Amazing. Set at the time of the inquisition, really really good! Follows an investigator and his mad group of friends/hangers on.

Grin Nelly I once spent about ten minutes cursing at the telly and calling Paxman names because I got a question about King John wrong, then realised I'd answered it based on something in a Sharon Penman book, and I actually had no idea what the actual historical facts were Blush Grin
