I'm currently re-reading The Hobbit, but i'm pregnant and I know my pregnancy brain will have a fit at me trying to follow on with Lord Of The Rings.

I recently read Stardust by Neil Gaiman which I loved.

I've read most of Clive Barker's stuff and Weaveworld and Imajica are two of my favourite books ever.
I recently read and enjoyed very much the whole Narnia series and Harry Potter too.
I'm quite happy for recommendations for books aimed at children as well as adults.

So - old classics, modern fantasy - I'm open to all sugstions please.

George RR Martin has ruined fantasy for me - nothing else seems as good! Proper grown-up fantasy with amazing characters and complex plots, I can't get enough of it.

Robin Hobb comes close though. I enjoyed her LiveShip trilogy, though the subsequent Dragon (something?) series has started to drag a bit unfortunately.

I don't recommend either Wheel of (wasted) Time personally, I gave up a few chapters into book 4 due to flat, boring characters, bad writing, and meandering pointless plot. Didn't like Mistborn for similar reasons, and that had a real fantasy-by-numbers feel to it as well.

I loved DragonLance as a teenager, absolutely adored it and really got invested in that world, and even read the later sequels that came out, for old times sakes. But not sure it would have the same impression if I read it for the first time now as an adult.

If you like alternate history/historical fiction, I really enjoyed Susanna Clarke's 'Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell', and her short stories too, absolutely beautifully written.

Oh my God, other people have read the books I love.

Robin Hobb The Assassin 1st book of that trilogy have re-read hundreds of times (then becomes Liveship trilogy and then final trilogy starts with Fools Errand. Really has to be read in that order. Flipping amazing.

Kelley Armstrong Bitten 1st book of a series about a female werewolf. Definitely worth the read, I have read all her other books even her young adult stuff.

And I am glad I now get to read stuff recommended on here rather than stare at the section in Waterstones and wonder what is good.

What about Christopher Fowler? Anyone who enjoyed Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman should try Christopher Fowler's Roofworld.

I also love his Bryant & May detective series, the only books I still buy in hardback.

I love this thread, love all of the authors mentioned!

I dont think anyone has said Jennifer Fallon who wrote the Harshini and Second Sun trilogies.

Cecelia Dart-Thornton is also good but her novels are very wordy and long, although I love the plots and atmosphere she creates.

Happy reading!

I haven't read any fantasy books for years, thought I'd try Game of Thrones and it's really good and enjoyable.

I love 'Fair Peril' by Nancy Springer, read it over and over but can't find my copy since I moved :(

Garth Nix Lireal, Sabriel and Abhorsen are great books.
