I am going a bit nuts attempting to find descriptions of foreign places in literature. I'm looking for some beautiful descriptions that use a range of figurative language, for example I have an extract from 'My Family and Other Animals' that describes the being on the boat, arriving at Corfu.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would really, really appreciate it!

Jan Morris writes beautifully. I love her book on Venice, but the other stuff I've read is fab too.
There is also a publishing company called "Traveller's Tales" which prints some excellent anthologies of superb travel writing.

In fiction, one that comes to mind is Brixton Beach by Roma Tearne. She writes beautifully about Sri Lanka.

Paul Theroux writes good travel books - he's written about various places around the world,- South America, Asia etc.

VS Naipaul writes about Trinidad in many of his novels.

Laurie lee - As I walked out One Midsummer Morning - Spain.

What about Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie writing about Nigeria.
