Trying to identify a book series about moles......

Not sure if this should be here or in Childrens books.......

I can remember as a teenager reading a series about a colony of moles who were living near some standing stones - almost like Watership Down crossed with Lord of the Rings. They met up with other mole colonies and went on journeys etc. I think there were several books in the series.

Ds wants to read some more animal based books and I suddenly remembered these when we were talking.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Confused

I think you mean Duncton Wood, can't remember who wrote it though.

tabulahrasa · 23/06/2012 20:06

Duncton Wood they're definitely not children's books

TheMightyMojoceratops · 23/06/2012 20:08

Animals of Farthing Wood may be more appropriate? How old is DS?

TheMightyMojoceratops · 23/06/2012 20:10

Or Redwall?

Animals of Farthing Wood is by Colin Dann, who also wrote lots of other animal-based stories.

whojamaflip · 23/06/2012 20:16

Duncton Wood - thats it!

Just had a quich squizz and its not suitable for ds (9).

Think I will steer him in the direction of Farthing Wood and Redwall and go and try and get copies of Duncton Wood for myself

Thankyou - it was driving me mad trying to remember the name Grin

Doesn't the mole one feature a mole crucifixion?

FFS....

I seem to remember them being a strange mixture of Mole Mysticism and Mole porn!

DD had a lovely Colin Dann book about three dogs who go on a journey to an island. I can't remember the title, but it was a lovely story - happy ending, but just the right amount of scary and tension to make it exciting.

Incaminka · 04/07/2012 14:16

Redwall was great fun, really nice.

And moajab, you remember rightly! :-D

TheSmallClanger · 04/07/2012 14:17

The Colin Dann one is The Beach Dogs.

How weird - I am re-reading the series. There are six in total. It is more confusing than I remember but it could be partly because before I read them really fast, now I'm lucky if I read more than a page without being interrupted/falling asleep, so i can't remember who a lot of the characters are!

If your son is a decent reader he might like My family and Other Animals - I read it for the first time at about that age.
The other one is 101 Dalmations - I know Disney got hold of it and mangled it but it's a very good story. As is the sequel, The Starlight Barking, about a day when humans don't wake up and dogs can choose whether to remain on earth with their humans or go and live with Scirius the Dog Star. I loved it at that age!
Finally, William Horwood (of Duncton Wood fame!) wrote one called Callanish about a golden eagle that escapes from London Zoo, and Louis de Bernieres wrote one called Red Dog, about , well, a dog! Both might be a bit old for him but it would be worth you checking them out to see what you think. Both slim books with easy storylines but maybe the language would be a bit hard for him to read.

I remember Duncton Wood. Not children's books but very good.

RabbitsMakeBrownEggs · 05/07/2012 11:25

Duncton Wood, one of my very favourite series of books. Hard to get hold of now I think, I've been trying.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 05/07/2012 11:30

I still have my set at home Smile

shimmy0 · 23/07/2012 20:49

King of the vagabonds was a good one if you can get it. I remember enjoying that as a kid.

GrimmaTheNome · 23/07/2012 20:54

Baby - I was very pleasantly suprised by 101 dalmatians (haven't read Starlight Barking - I bought them for DD ages ago but I think she's been put off by disney). Dodie Smith was of course a proper writer. Smile

Nigglenaggle · 23/07/2012 20:58

The Cold Moons is another about badgers that I read at about that age - it made me cry but I loved it
