I'd now count it in my list of life-long-loved books, which include:
A fine balance
To kill a mockingbird
Poisonwood bible
Wuthering heights
Remains of the day
Magic toyshop
Birdsong
Jane eyre
Rebecca

Have left out loads, just off top of head in hope that it will inspire some recommendations!

I loved The Road too! Just finished The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. Absolutely brilliant! To kill a mockingbird is my fav book.

Hi jet , I also loved it. Also, Cat's Eye by Atwood is brilliant, oh and Amazing Grace. Have you any others you could suggest?

I know its not very exciting as its the same author but I loved Blood Meridian and Outer Dark, I read Blood Meridian not long after having dd and was haunted by some of the scenes from it - I wish I hadn't read it but couldn't put it down! It will make sense when you read it honest Wink

The Stand by Stephen King
White Horses by Alex someone
The Passage by Justin Cronin

Blood meridian has been playing in my mind but I don't want to be disappointed! Will check them out viva - have never considered reading Stephen king; tend to just think of him in terms of thriller/horror and not life-enhancing iykwim Blush.

I really recommend State of Wonder by Ann Patchett. An interesting setting (Amazonian rain forest), big themes and well-defined characters. Also Bel Canto by the same author.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/06/2012 21:56

I don't like horror books but Stephen King has written plenty of non horror/thriller books.

Gotosleepffs · 21/06/2012 22:00

Ok, will look properly at king Smile

I have read both Cats Eye and Alias Grace. They are excellent especially Alias. At the moment i'm reading a lot of Scandi crime - I loved the Girl with Dragon Tattoo trilogy. I fancy something to get my teeth into now though so the next book on my shelf to read is The Blind Assasin by Mararet Atwood.

On the Beach. If you found The Road moving, you will love On The Beach (by Neville Shute)
I always start to well up about a third of the way through, and by the end am sobbing too hard to see straight. Not in a bad way, it's one I have to be "in the mood for a cry" iyswim, it so so sad, and moving, and yet just so good too.

Gotosleepffs · 22/06/2012 12:20

pom that's so interesting as another favourite of mine is A Town Like Alice (also Shute) which I was considering re-reading. Will try your suggestion, sounds like what I fancy at the mo. wonder if it's on kindle? Prob not.

It might be on Kindle as one of the "Sci-Fi Masterworks" series or something like that, it's up there with the other classics of the post-apocalyptic genre so could well be.
